SHOW RESPECT, SLOW DOWN AND KEEP OUR ROADWORKERS SAFE

SHOW RESPECT, SLOW DOWN AND KEEP OUR ROADWORKERS SAFE 2 mins read

The Allan Labor Government is launching a new awareness campaign urging drivers to slow down, be patient and show respect when encountering workers on the state’s roads.

Research from the Traffic Management Association of Australia revealed an increase in physical and verbal aggression towards roadworkers, including statistics showing that roadworkers are verbally assaulted on average once a week and will report one motorist refusing to stop once a fortnight.

The We’re People Too campaign will remind drivers that their actions can impact the physical and mental safety of Victorian roadworkers, and in some instances these actions can have deadly consequences.

The campaign will run across multiple media platforms between Sunday, 3 November and New Year’s Eve – and will feature four Victorian roadworkers sharing details about their lives when they’re away from the roadside.

The Labor Government recently launched the $964 million road maintenance blitz, which is the state’s largest ever single-year road maintenance investment – and roadworker crews will be completing thousands of projects on the network until mid-next year.

Drivers are asked to be patient and pay attention, including to temporary speed zones established around worksites to ensure roadworker safety. Penalties apply for not obeying reduced speed limits.

Hazards including roadside excavations, the presence of heavy machinery, or a change in space available for through traffic are just a few of the reasons for reduced speed limits.

Under the Victorian Road Safety Strategy 2021-2030, the Government is working across education, infrastructure, policy, and technology to halve road deaths, reduce serious injury and ultimately achieve zero trauma by 2050.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne

“Roadworkers should be treated with respect as they carry out the important job of improving our road network every day across Victoria.”

“Every Victorian deserves the right to feel safe at work - this campaign is a reminder that the decisions every driver makes can be the reason our roadworkers make it home safely each day to their loved ones.”

Industry rejects the Victorian Government’s proposed gas ban

A coalition of leading Victorian industry bodies, representing more than 100,000 businesses and tens of billions of dollars in investment, is urging the state government to reconsider its proposed gas ban. The Building Electrification Regulatory Impact Statement will increase costs for large and small businesses, stifle crucial gas investment and leave Victorians facing higher energy bills and reduced energy security. The proposed gas ban would saddle Victoria's 70,000 gas-reliant businesses with significantly higher operating costs into the future, as they absorb the network costs previously shared across all gas users. This policy would also deter new energy-intensive businesses, undermining opportunities…

Rewiring Australia endorses Victorian electrification push to save households money

Rewiring Australia has endorsed the Victorian Government’s proposed rule to phase out expensive gas appliances, which will lower energy bills and emissions for households across the state. “Thanks to this policy, more Victorians will have lower energy bills and healthier homes,” said Chief Executive Officer Dan Cass. "We back the Victorian Government’s plans to help households make smarter energy choices by only replacing gas heating and hot water with cheaper, electric alternatives.” Victorian Government modelling has found that households that go all-electric can save $1,700 a year, or up to $2,700 a year with solar installed – a 60 per…

Victoria’s gas bans take away consumer choice, hurt the economy and will force households and businesses into debt

13 December 2024 The Gas Appliance Manufacturers Association of Australia (GAMAA) today expressed its disappointment that the Victorian Government has once again ignored feedback from industry regarding the real costs of its proposed bans on replacing or installing gas appliances in new and existing households and new commercial buildings. GAMAA president Ross Jamieson said: “Rather than listening to advice based on independent experts the government has released a Regulatory Impact Statement (RIS) that excludes any option for cost-effective like-for-like replacement by high-efficiency gas appliances which would save households over $200 per year and reduce gas use by 25% at no…
