TALENT ALERT: doctors available to speak to the health impacts of potential extreme weather over summer

Doctors for the Environment Australia < 1 mins read

With summer around the corner, Australians are bracing themselves for what could be the hottest summer on record--similar to the northern hemisphere, which this year experienced unparalleled summer warmth.

Hot days and heatwaves, bushfires and bushfire smoke, thunderstorms and flash flooding all increase fatalities and illnesses- including the associated mental toll.

Medical group Doctors for the Environment Australia has members all over the country who will be available to assist journalists in reporting how extreme events affect health.

They include emergency physicians, GPs, psychiatrists, paediatricians, public health specialists, and other experts.

We also have a number of informative fact sheets, including

80 PER CENT OF YOUNG WOMEN WANT TO RIDE A BIKE – WHAT’S STOPPING THEM?

In a world-first study, Monash University researchers have found that 92% of young Victorian women, aged 18-29, are interested in riding a bike, but their participation is 4 times lower than men of the same age – demonstrating huge unmet demand. Research by Dr Lauren Pearson and colleagues found that this is influenced by Australia’s current transport networks and support systems being set up for the needs and safety perceptions of confident, physically fit men. Her research has found that the top barriers to riding a bike for young women are: concern about collision with motor vehicle (70%); they do…
