The House hosts My First Speech winners

Department of the House of Representatives < 1 mins read

The winners of the My First Speech competition will be visiting Canberra next week to have their say.

The competition asks students to imagine themselves as a newly elected Member of the House of Representatives. They are tasked with writing a 90 second speech about issues they are passionate about, just like a new Member of the House of Representatives.

The judges for the 2024 competition were the Speaker of the House, the Hon Milton Dick MP, Member for Longman, Mr Terry Young MP and Member for Curtin, Ms Kate Chaney MP.

This year’s winning speeches covered the issues of small business, reducing online harm and better access to education. The winners will be flown to Canberra—to deliver their speeches live at an award ceremony in Parliament House on Wednesday 6th November 2024.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Hon Milton Dick MP will be welcoming the winners to Parliament House and hosting the award ceremony where the students will deliver their speeches.

“The My First Speech Competition is a fantastic way for our future leaders to get involved in democracy and speak about the issues that are important to them,” said the Speaker.

New eSafety advisory hub warns unrestricted chatbots threaten child development

Children are using AI-driven chatbots for hours daily, giving them interactive access to unrestricted themes from sex to drug-taking, self-harm, suicide and serious illnesses, such as eating disorders. The first of eSafety’s new Online Safety Advisory series warns chatbots are exposing children to unmoderated conversations which may encourage or reinforce harmful thoughts and behaviours. eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant said most AI-driven chatbots were not designed with safety in mind and children were not developmentally ready for the risks. “AI companions can share harmful content, distort reality and give advice that is dangerous,” she said. “In addition, they are often…

Taxpayers should not foot the bill for nuclear risk: Australians for Affordable Energy

If private insurers refuse to cover nuclear reactors the financial risks will be shifted onto Australian taxpayers, meaning we are still unclear how much taxpayers will have to cover of the nuclear bill. Australians for Affordable Energy has expressed deep concern over the revelation the private sector may not be able to insure nuclear reactors, following comments on Monday from the CEO of the Insurance Council of Australia. Many of Australia’s leading insurance companies won’t cover damage from a nuclear disaster, leaving the government as the insurer. By shifting the financial burden of insuring nuclear facilities onto taxpayers, Australians could…

Short-term reforms welcomed, but bold long-term action needed

Catholic Health Australia (CHA) is calling for stronger, long-term reforms to ensure the sustainability of private hospital services across the country, especially in our regions, as they grapple with mounting financial pressures. “The government’s reforms announced last year will provide much-needed short-term relief, but we must take bold steps to guarantee the long-term viability of private hospitals,” said Catholic Health Australia CEO Jason Kara. CHA’s budget submission on health outlines several recommendations to address the financial and operational challenges faced by private hospitals. These include: using private hospital capacity to treat public patients on long waitlists incorporating current and future…
