ANZACATA welcomes independent review of pricing for art and music therapy by National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA)

Australian, New Zealand and Asian Creative Arts Therapies Association (ANZACATA) 2 mins read

Friday 13 December 2024: Australian, New Zealand and Asian Creative Arts Therapies Association (ANZACATA) welcomes today’s announcement by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) that it is commissioning an independent review of appropriate NDIS pricing for music and art supports.

Dr Kate Dempsey, CEO of ANZACATA said, “ANZACATA welcomes the NDIA’s decision to defer any price changes and we look forward to putting our evidence forward. ANZACATA also looks forward to working closely with Dr Stephen Duckett AM in his deliberations.

“We are very pleased that there will be no change for ANZACATA members on the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) until the conclusion of the NDIA independent review of our evidence base by Dr Stephen Duckett AM, which we anticipate will be completed mid-March 2025.

“We extend our thanks to Minister Shorten for his intervention and to all the ANZACATA members and Allied Health Professionals who have supported our advocacy efforts to keep arts therapy accessible for people with disability,” commented Dr Dempsey.

Arts therapy is a proven, evidence-based treatment modality, currently providing essential support to NDIS participants who often struggle to engage with conventional therapeutic approaches. Arts therapy has been a funded therapeutic support since the NDIS commenced in 2014.

Arts therapists in Australia complete rigorous clinical training specifically designed to support people with disability. This professional workforce has developed specialised expertise in making arts therapy accessible to vulnerable community members who may otherwise be unable to access appropriate support services.

Australia Urged to ‘Float to Survive’ as Drowning Deaths Surge

Australia Urged to ‘Float to Survive’ as Drowning Deaths Surge Sydney, Australia — 8 January 2026— As Australia prepares for another busy summer on the water, lifeguards and water safety experts are issuing a clear and urgent message: if you are caught in trouble, floating — not swimming — could save your life. The National Drowning Report 2025 reveals 357 people drowned across Australia in the past year, a 27 per cent increase on the 10-year average, marking one of the deadliest years on record. A series of recent drowning deaths and near-fatal incidents at Australian beaches and waterways have…

Dr Simon Longstaff AO on the Bondi Massacre: A National Response

What is the best response to the massacre of Jewish people at Bondi Beach? I ask that question knowing that the best response may not be the most popular. For example, the debate about whether or not there should be a Federal Royal Commission has made it abundantly clear that people can reasonably and sincerely disagree about what should be done. The same debate has also revealed that some people have deliberately (and others inadvertently) politicised what should be a matter of broad national consensus – with the ideal response being of a kind that meets a number of core…
