CAKE SHOW’s SWEET SUCCESS – GLOBAL RECOGNITION FOR BRISBANE’S BAKERS!

International Cake Show Australia 3 mins read

Brisbane cake bosses among best in the world

Never in a million years did a not-for-profit group of Queensland cake and cookie artists believe their big dream to deliver a world class cake and cookie show for Australia, would ever become reality, let alone attract international recognition and attention.

It DID become a reality and this month when the International Cake Show Australia was named as one of six global finalists (for the second time) for “Best Show in the World” by the industry leading, UK based “Cake Masters Magazine Awards”.

The awards recognize the huge achievements of the best of the very best cake artists and show organisers around the world. While Cakeology in India took the title, Brisbane mixed it with the best in the world – finalists included:

  • The Cake & Bake Show - London
  • International Cake Show Australia - Brisbane
  • Cake Talks - Oman (Middle East)
  • Cakeology - Bombay, India
  • Cake & Bake Show - Dortmund Germany
  • Cake International - Birmingham (the largest cake show in the world)

Joan McDermott, President of the Australian Cake Artists & Decorators Association (ACADA) said they were blown away when their Brisbane-based International Cake Show Australia was named as a finalist for best cake show in the world, not once, but twice. She explained ACADA and the show were started by a group of creative women around a kitchen table.

“Every year as more people hear about the show, it has grown. It’s now in its eighth year and the International Cake Show Australia is now the largest Cake, Cookie & Sugar Art Show in the southern hemisphere. It attracts visitors and competitors from all parts of Australia and more than 30 different countries,” she said.

“The global cake event calendar is big business, and it’s a major tourism drawcard.”

Joan explained the show was started after visiting a similar show in the UK which attracts more than 100,000 visitors annually. She said ACADA’s goal was to deliver a major international similar tourism event with economic benefit for Queensland and Australia.

“Originally we just wanted to create a not-for-profit organization and event that provided free training for home based decorators and sweet loving foodies, of all ages. We wanted to encourage them to have a go. Motivated by shows like The Great Australian Bake off and Dessert Masters,  the number of people moving from corporate careers to start home based cake and cookie decorating business is mammoth, there are literally hundreds of thousands in the sector,” she said.

McDermott said you’d be wrong if you associated the event with the older generation or the humble chocolate cake.

“The show hosts Australia’s largest cake and cookie decorating competition, it’s  a bigger cake and cookie show than the Royal Sydney Easter Show or the Ekka. Everyone from students, beginners to executive pastry chefs are invited to enter, and we welcome  so many international cake an cookie artists – every year there’s more that make the trip to Brisbane from around the world.  Entry registration is open now on the ACADA Website https://www.acada.com.au/competition-enter.html for 2025!”

Each year the show continues to grow. 2024 was a huge milestone with International Cake Show Australia being officially recognised as a Major Event. However Joan McDermott said, 2025 will offer even more.

“The 2025 show is looking like being the icing on the cake, pardon the pun! Some of the huge feature CAKE DISPLAYS already confirmed include:
