Formula SAE-A is proud to announce Caterpillar Australia as the official naming rights sponsor for the Formula SAE-A 2024 competition. The partnership will see Caterpillar Australia play a vital role in fostering the development of future engineering talent, with a focus on sustainability and innovation. As part of this sponsorship, Caterpillar Australia will also sponsor our popular Autonomous Vehicle (AV) demonstration event.

The Formula SAE-A 2024 competition will take place from December 5-8, 2024, at Calder Park Raceway in Victoria, Australia. This annual event challenges university students to design, build, and test their own Formula-style cars. With the inclusion of the AV category, teams will also demonstrate cutting-edge autonomous vehicle technology, a critical area for the future of mobility.

"We are thrilled to welcome Caterpillar Australia as our naming rights sponsor for 2024," said Adrian Feeney, CEO of the Society of Automotive Engineers Australasia (SAE-A). "Their commitment to innovation aligns perfectly with the ethos of Formula SAE-A, particularly in the growing realm of autonomous vehicle development."

Caterpillar Australia’s sponsorship underscores their dedication to the development of engineering talent in Australia and their support for sustainable, innovative technologies that are shaping the future of industries such as construction, defence and aerospace, rail and rolling stock, mining, and transportation.

The Formula SAE-A competition attracts teams from Universities Australia-wide and across the globe, with students from countries such as New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, USA, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Japan participating. This global interest highlights the competition's role in shaping the future of mobility and transport technologies.

About us:

Formula SAE-A (FSAE-A) is an engineering competition where university students from across Australia and overseas design, build, and test small-scale, high-performance
Formula-style cars. It combines innovative design and engineering, manufacturing and project management, providing a platform that allows hands-on learning experiences for future engineers while they study.

FSAE-A has been a success story since its inception in the year 2000. The program is used as a recruitment tool for many industry sectors requiring the best and the brightest engineers in Australia and New Zealand.

Competition Format

FSAE-A involves both a static and dynamic event that validates and tests the performance of the vehicle including the team's technical expertise, design processes, presentation and cost analysis.

Electric and Autonomous Vehicle Focus

This year FSAE-A brings an increasing number of electric and autonomous vehicles, reflecting the automotive industry’s shift towards electrification, sustainability and innovation.

Electric Vehicles now dominate the competition with increasing interest in autonomous vehicle technology demonstrations, while a few internal combustion engine (ICE) cars continue to push the boundaries of traditional technologies.

·        Electric Vehicles: Cars powered solely by electric motors, with special emphasis on battery management, motor efficiency and electric powertrain design.

·        Autonomous Vehicles: Driverless cars navigate a set course by applying the latest sensor technology, artificial intelligence and real-time data processing.

Why Come to Formula SAE-A 2024?

·        Spotlight on Innovation: A unique insight into the future of automotive engineering, with electric vehicles and sustainable technologies playing a key role.

·        Empowerment: A platform for the next generation of engineers, innovators and problem solvers to demonstrate their skills and creativity.
