The Rural Fire Service Association (RFSA) has thanked volunteer firefighters on International Volunteer Day as they stand ready to protect communities from bush fires and other emergencies over the festive period.
Rural Fire Service (RFS) volunteers have already been called on to battle blazes across the state, with the threat of more fires to come over the holiday period.
RFSA President Scott Campbell praised volunteer firefighters for their dedication to their communities no matter the time of year or the emergency response required, be it bushfire, motor vehicle accident or structure fire.
“Christmas is a joyous time of year when we can stop and enjoy the company of our friends and loved ones. But for volunteer firefighters there is always the chance that they’ll be called to an emergency, and I know if that time comes they won’t hesitate,” Mr Campbell said.
“International Volunteer Day is a day to recognise the sacrifice that volunteers make, giving up their time purely for the benefit of others.
“Volunteer firefighters go a step further by putting their lives on the line to save others and protect their communities, and we are incredibly grateful for their courage and commitment.
“On a day like today, and over the Christmas period, spare a thought for volunteers who will be donating their time and effort to help others.
“We have already seen bush fires this season and although we hope we don’t see more, the reality is we will. I want to take this opportunity to thank volunteer firefighters who always stand ready to protect lives and livelihoods.”
