Lord Mayors Welcome Findings in Australian Homelessness Monitor Report

Council of Capital City Lord Mayors < 1 mins read

The Council of Capital City Lord Mayors (CCCLM) has welcomed the release of the Australian Homelessness Monitor 2024, which highlights the complex needs of vulnerable members of our communities who are at risk of or experiencing homelessness.

A key chapter of the report focuses on the critical role of Local Government, emphasising the challenges faced in delivering support and assistance to people experiencing homelessness while navigating community and business expectations in public spaces.

The Lord Mayor of Darwin and current CCCLM Chair, Kon Vatskalis, commended the sector's tireless efforts to both prevent homelessness and support those in need. However, he highlighted the increasing strain on local resources.

"Local Government, as managers of the public realm, is under growing pressure to respond to this crisis," Lord Mayor Vatskalis said. "This report underscores the significant contributions Local Governments are already making, but also reinforces the urgent need for Federal Government action. We need a strong commitment to affordable and social housing, as well as mechanisms to support those experiencing homelessness."

The CCCLM believes homelessness should be rare, brief, and non-occurring. To achieve this, collaboration across all levels of government is essential, alongside sustained investment in housing and support systems to provide lasting solutions.

The CCCLM is proud to have provided funding for this vital research, ensuring that evidence-based insights continue to inform policies and actions that address homelessness in Australia.

The CCCLM reiterates its call for unified and immediate action to address the homelessness crisis and ensure sustainable, long-term outcomes for all Australians.

Key Robodebt RC recommendations still not implemented two years on

Two years on from the findings of the Robodebt Royal Commission, the Federal Government has still not implemented all of its recommendations, and alarming flaws in the social security system remain. “Robodebt was a shocking abuse of government power that caused severe distress to more than 400,000 innocent people,” said Charmaine Crowe, ACOSS Program Director of Social Security. Robodebt was a scheme implemented from 2015-2020 that illegally calculated social security debts by averaging annual income earned by people receiving income support over fortnights, resulting in inaccurate debts. “Many of the victims suffered financial hardship, relationship breakdowns, mental health difficulties and…

‘It’s greenwashing’: Albanese Government disguises carbon dumping as renewable energy in new project approvals

Thursday 3 July 2025 The Environment Centre Northern Territory is dismayed that the Albanese Government is spinning one of the world’s largest carbon dumping projects as a ‘low carbon' project while opening the floodgates to massive gas expansion across the Northern Territory. In a move many would label as greenwashing, the Albanese Government has designated the Bonaparte Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project, 250km northwest of Darwin as a Major Project and claimed it will “enable the development of low-carbon industries in the region”. In fact, the joint venture between some of Australia’s biggest polluters and fossil fuel companies -…
