New machine makes it easy to ‘return and earn’ in Marrickville

Return and Earn 2 mins read

Return and Earn has launched an innovative “takes all” machine that is set to transform how residents of Marrickville recycle their eligible bottles, cans and cartons this summer.

No more pre-sorting of containers – you can now drop all your eligible
drink containers through any single chute at our new machine, making it faster to return and earn the 10c refund for every container.

The Marrickville Return and Earn machine is the 12th return point in the Inner West Council area. It is located at 54 Smidmore Street and entry is via Edinburgh Road. The machine is open daily from 7:00am to 10:00pm.

“Inner West Council residents are already enthusiastic recyclers, having returned more than over 212 million eligible bottles, cans and cartons through local return points since the scheme began,” said James Dorney, CEO of TOMRA Cleanaway, network operator for Return and Earn.

“These improvements to local return points will make it even easier and quicker to return your eligible bottles and cans and pocket the refund.”

Recyclers can still print a voucher for the refund amount, which can be redeemed for cash at Coles, or they can opt for an e-voucher or payment directly into their bank or PayPal account using the Return and Earn app.

Locals can also donate their refund to one of over 300 donation partners listed on the Return and Earn app, or to the current statewide donation partner Foodbank NSW & ACT. Foodbank is a food relief charity providing much needed assistance to individuals and families across NSW and the ACT.

Return and Earn has become a key fundraising channel for many charities and community groups in NSW. Over $62 million has been raised from donations and fees from hosting return points since the scheme launched in 2017.

More than 12.5 billion drink containers have been returned for recycling through the network of over 650 return points across NSW since Return and Earn began, resulting in over $1.25 billion in container refunds back in people’s pockets.

Summer is peak season for Return and Earn, with up to nine million containers expected to be returned daily in December and January. To make your return experience stress-free, you can check the live status of machines on the Return and Earn website or the app before heading out to avoid delays. You can also check your containers eligibility for the 10c refund using the container checker tool on the app

For immediate release 16 Jan 2025 The findings in the Climate Council’s reportElectric Shock! Australia’s Lightbulb Moment, released today, confirm the huge information gap that exists among communities when it comes to renewable energy – most Australians don’t know that almost 40% of our total electricity supply already comes from renewables. Electric Shock: Half of NSW in the dark on renewable energy progress, knowledge gap risks slowing transition

16th of January 2024 AUSTRALIANS ARE UNDERESTIMATING the speed and scale of our switch to renewable power. New South Wales is in the midst of a clean energy boom as four-fifths of our electricity is set to come from renewable sources by 2030, and all of our ageing coal-fired power stations closing by 2040. However, new Essential Research polling commissioned by the Climate Council—Electric Shock! Australia’s Lightbulb Moment—shows a glaring knowledge gap that risks undermining trust in the energy transition. Addressing this gap is key to empowering New South Wales to embrace and benefit from the increasing momentum of renewable…
