Sorrento Surf Lifesaving Club (SoSLSC) is thrilled to announce its partnership with KaMana, a pioneering initiative that supports and empowers young female athletes. This bespoke program, designed for female members aged 12-18, will help participants build confidence, resilience, and skills to excel both within and beyond the surf lifesaving community.
The program is made possible thanks to the generous support of the City of Joondalup, whose grant funding will enable the delivery of this impactful initiative.
Empowering Female Members
Led by Australian Ironwomen champions Harriet Brown and Lizzie Welborn, the KaMana program addresses challenges unique to young female members, including body confidence, athlete health, nutrition, and performance mindset. Harriet and Lizzie bring a wealth of experience as elite athletes and mentors to inspire and guide the next generation.
- Harriet Brown: Harriet is one of the most decorated athletes in Australian surf lifesaving. With two Ironwoman Series titles, a World Ironwoman Championship, and three Molokai 2 Oahu Paddleboard Championship wins (current record holder), Harriet is a role model for young athletes. As an Exercise Physiologist and former Australian Team Captain, Harriet combines her professional knowledge with her passion for empowering women in sport.
- Lizzie Welborn: Lizzie, who qualified for the professional Ironwoman series at just 16, is a rising star in surf sports. Over her nine-year career, she has placed second in the Ironwoman Series and Summer of Surf series and has represented Australia multiple times. Lizzie brings a unique perspective on overcoming pressures, managing body confidence, and excelling in competitive environments, making her an inspiring mentor for young athletes.
Program Highlights
The KaMana program will offer a range of activities throughout the season, including:
- Online Zoom Sessions: Covering topics such as goal setting, nutrition, technique, and performance habits.
- In-Person Workshops: Confidence-building and educational sessions at Sorrento, including mixed-gender events.
- Beach Skills Sessions: Hands-on coaching to improve surf lifesaving skills.
- Mentoring Opportunities: Ongoing support and engagement with Harriet, Lizzie, and the KaMana team.
“We are proud to introduce this ground-breaking initiative for our female members, thanks to the invaluable support of the City of Joondalup,” said David Tasker, Business & Marketing Director at SoSLSC. “Harriet and Lizzie are incredible role models, and their expertise will help our young women thrive both on and off the beach.”
Community Impact
The program also extends its benefits beyond the club, with opportunities to collaborate with local schools and sports groups in partnership with the City of Joondalup. Workshops tailored to these groups will further promote the values of confidence and resilience in young women across the community.
