Elvis has entered the building… to save the Koala

Australian Koala Foundation 2 mins read

28 JANUARY 2024

In a heartfelt transition at the Australian Koala Foundation, Mr. Darcy, the golden retriever who has been a steadfast conservationist for the past fourteen years, is set to hand over his responsibilities to his younger protege, Elvis.

As Mr. Darcy embarks on a well-deserved retirement, a reminder is extended to all dog owners, to continue the legacy of responsible dog behaviour around wildlife, with a special focus on our beloved Koalas.

Mr. Darcy’s journey has showcased the profound impact that well-trained and socially responsible dogs can have on the conservation of Australia’s unique biodiversity, ultimately lessening a key threat to Koala safety – dog attacks.

Deborah Tabart OAM, Chair of the Australian Koala Foundation and dog-parent of Mr. Darcy and Elvis, expresses gratitude for Mr. Darcy’s exceptional service.

“Mr. Darcy has been a true ambassador for the behaviour between dogs and wildlife.” Tabart said.

“As he steps back, we invite all pet owners to join us in supporting Elvis, as he takes on this vital responsibility.”

Elvis, currently undergoing specialised training from Mr. Darcy, will embody Mr. Darcy’s spirit as a wildlife conservationist.

The transition from Mr. Darcy to Elvis marks not just a change in leadership but an opportunity for pet owners to contribute to the ongoing success of this vital conservation mission.

“If you’ve experienced the joy of sharing your life with a golden retriever, you understand the special bond they forge with people and nature.” Tabart said.

“We’re counting on pet owners to continue Mr. Darcy’s legacy, and Elvis’ new position, through their own pets, fostering a world where every tail wag contributes to the well-being of our iconic wildlife.”

The Australian Koala Foundation extends heartfelt thanks to Mr. Darcy for his decade of service and welcomes golden retriever owners to be part of the journey as Elvis steps into his new role as a wildlife ambassador.

To support the Australian Koala Foundation’s Koala conservation initiatives, consider planting a tree, adopting a Koala, shopping online, or making a direct donation.

Cage egg phase out in spotlight with launch of world’s biggest global investigation

The Australian Alliance for Animals has today joined members of the global Open Wing Alliance in calling for faster action on ending battery cages as the world’s biggest investigation into the cruelty of cage egg production is released. Undercover footage obtained from over 37 countries – including Australia – lays bare the ongoing, systemic suffering of millions of hens confined to battery cages, despite growing global momentum to go cage-free. Taxpayer millions wasted on a dying duck shooting season

The final long weekend of Victoria's 2025 recreational duck shooting season ended last Monday,June 9, as it started, extremely quiet with very few shooters. It highlighted the shockingmisuse of public funds which are used to prop up recreational duck shooting seasons for duckshooters who make up just 0.2 percent of Victoria’s population, the Coalition Against DuckShooting Campaign Director, Laurie Levy, said today. "With Victoria’s crippling debt of about $170 billion, PremierJacinta Allan should have the vision to immediately replace duck shooting, which costs Victorian taxpayers around $11 million annually, with a First Nations nature-based, cultural wetlands tourism industry, which would…
