Experts warn to be extra diligent in the afternoon this long weekend

Kids Alive 2 mins read

As Australia gears up for the final long weekend of summer, water safety experts are issuing an urgent warning to be vigilant. 68 people have drowned since December 1, marking a concerning 15% increase compared to the five-year average of 59 drowning deaths during the same period. With a month of summer still to go, the nation is being put on high alert.

Concerningly, 15% of this summer’s drowning victims were children aged 0-17. Research highlights that weekends pose the greatest risk of drowning, especially in the afternoon with 40% of drownings occurring between 12 PM and 6 PM.

Beaches, rivers, and creeks remain the most hazardous locations, with swimming and boating identified as the highest-risk activities.

With water safety front of mind Kids Alive is urging Australians to brush up on their water safety knowledge and keep an eye on a mate with the “Watch Your Mate” Program relaunching for 2025. Designed to celebrate individuals who make significant contributions to water safety in their communities, it also serves as a reminder for families about the importance of supervision and the need to brush up on their water safety awareness.

Laurie Lawrence, Kids Alive founder and renowned water safety advocate, stressed the importance of vigilance this long weekend.

“Drowning is a preventable tragedy, yet we’re seeing the same patterns year after year. With the long weekend ahead, it’s critical to take water safety seriously to ensure everyone gets home safely. No family should have to suffer the heartbreak of losing a loved one.”

Water Safety Tips for the Long Weekend:

  1. Supervise closely – Always watch children around water and avoid distractions.
  2. Swim between the flags – At beaches, stick to patrolled areas.
  3. Wear a life jacket – Especially during boating or other watercraft activities.
  4. Check the conditions – Understand the environment before entering the water.
  5. Know CPR – Being prepared can save a life.

Key Facts:
  • Summer fatal drowning tolls have seen an increase from last year same time
  • Concerningly, 40% of drownings occur in the afternoon between 12- 6
  • With the upcoming long weekend tempting Aussies to the water, Kids Alive is calling for Australians to be vigilant with water safety
