Fair Work Commission Order –

CFMEU Manufacturing Division Demerger Ballot

The National Secretary of the Manufacturing Division of the CFMEU Mr Michael O’Connor has welcomed the Fair Work Commision’s issuing of Orders for a demerger ballot to take place between February 24th to April 14th 2025.

“We have fought tooth and nail to ensure that our members were given the democratic right to determine their own futurethrough a secret ballot and now we have achieved it.”

The successful application for a demerger ballot came after the Manufacturing Division lobbied to have the Fair Work Act amended to specifically allow the Manufacturing Division to make an application for a demerger.

Our Division wants to thank the Government and the then Minister Tony Burke for agreeing to the legislation and Senator Lambie who fought tooth and nail to give our members a say on their future.

With the Mining and Energy Union leaving the CFMEU in December 2023, the Manufacturing Division is expecting to also see a successful vote to leave.

“The overwhelming majority of our members want nothing to do with the toxic culture of the Construction Division of the CFMEU and we expect the YES vote to be carried with a big majority” said Mr O’Connor.

The Manufacturing Division has withstood an attack on its membership and well-financed interference in its elections from the Construction Division in recent years.

Helensburgh miners locked out in dramatic escalation: MEU

US coal giant Peabody has locked out miners for over a week at their Metropolitan Mine near Helensburgh, in retaliation for union action that stopped work for a single hour. Earlier this week, Mining and Energy Union members at the South Coast mine engaged in one hour shift stoppages in response to Peabody’s lack of progress in negotiations, which also include a blatant attack on job security. In retaliation, Peabody has notified Mining and Energy Union members that they will be locked out without pay from 5:30pm on Wednesday, 18 June until 5:30am on Thursday, 26 June. Mark Jenkins, Vice…

Future Jobs and Investment Authority: Support for energy regions must start now

The NSW Government’s funding commitment for a Future Jobs and Investment Authority to support coal-producing regions is an important step towards future-proofing jobs and career pathways for workers, the Mining and Energy Union said today. MEU Northern Mining and NSW Energy District President Robin Williams said the Hunter’s economic prosperity was underpinned by the coal industry. “Coal will continue to provide good, well-paid jobs for many years to come. However, with significant closures looming, all levels of government must work together to ensure the future prosperity of coal regions like ours. “This must include investment in new economic development to…
