Monash expert: Meta gets rid of independent fact checkers

Meta is abandoning the use of independent fact checkers on Facebook and Instagram, replacing them with "community notes" where commenting on the accuracy of posts is left to users.

Comments attributable to Dr Briant:

“Anyone surprised by this news learned nothing from Mark Zuckerberg's role in the Cambridge Analytica affair.

“While they may pay lip service to the policy concerns of the moment, tech oligarchs run their companies to maximise profits and minimise costs, not to be society's protector or mediate a neutral, democratic town hall.

“This applies to all of them, not just Elon Musk.

“There is nothing to stop tech oligarchs weaponising their platforms to suit political objectives when the moment is right.

“Fact-checking is only one small part of the solution to the problem of contemporary propaganda. Policymakers often put too much faith in labelling false claims, and in so doing they miss an opportunity to take on the larger problems of a manipulative technology infrastructure hiding behind claims of neutrality and free speech.

“With at least 13 billionaires in his new administration, including Big Tech oligarchs like Musk, Trump has sent a powerful message across America's wealthy right wing elite - now is your time, not theirs.

“Clearly Mark Zuckerberg heard him loud and clear. Ordinary citizens should be very concerned.”

Australian Conservation Foundation warns of more climate catastrophes as LA wildfires burn and 2024 declared hottest year on record

11 January 2025 ACF warns of more climate catastrophes as LA wildfires burn and 2024 declared hottest year on record With 2024 now officially declared the hottest year on record, and wildfires continuing to rage in California, the Australian Conservation Foundation says urgent action is needed to phase out fossil fuels globally. The European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service confirmed on Friday, previous projections that 2024 was the warmest on record globally and the first year the average temperature exceeded 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. “This is what 1.5°C of global warming looks like,” Annika Reynolds (they/them), ACF’s national climate policy…

TIBET EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS NEED HELP, NOT HARM

Tibetans and Tibet organisations around the world are deeply saddened by the devastating earthquake [1] that struck Chinese-occupied Tibet on 7 January 2025 [2]. At this critical moment, the safety and welfare of those affected by the earthquake must be given full priority. To this end, we call on world governments to provide support and oversight to all of China’s disaster relief efforts in order to ensure impacted Tibetan communities receive the required aid and assistance. They must also ensure the Chinese government does not use its earthquake response as a pretext to further its colonial policies in Tibet as…
