NCOSS WELCOMES GAMBLING ADVERTISING BAN ON NSW PUBLIC TRANSPORT, CALLS FOR FURTHER ACTION

NCOSS has welcomed the NSW Government’s ban on gambling advertising across the NSW public transport network but called for further action to reduce gambling harm.

The ban applies to Transport-owned and controlled assets, including trains, metro, buses, light rail, train stations and ferry terminals.

NCOSS CEO Cara Varian said this was an encouraging move to further reduce the harm of gambling but reiterated her call for mandatory cashless gaming on poker machines.

“We are pleased to see the NSW Government removing gambling ads from its stations, billboards, buses, trams and trains,” Ms Varian said.

“We know the devastating impact that gambling harm has on our community, and any step towards reducing its prevalence is a good thing.

“However, if the NSW Government is serious about reducing gambling harm, they should implement mandatory cashless gaming on our poker machines, as recommended in the Independent Panel on Gaming Reform Report.

“NSW sadly leads the nation in poker machine losses, with more than $8.1 billion lost in 2023 (or $1,000 for every adult and child in the state), which is the highest per capita poker machine loss in the world.

“Our state is also home to more than 87,000 poker machines and is deep in the grip of a gambling harm public health crisis.

“We commend the Government for its announcement today, but we encourage it to ramp up its efforts and implement stronger gambling reform measures.”

NSW Upper House Inquiry Should Call Premier Not Staffers

Quotes attributable to Stewart Little, General Secretary of the Public Service Association (PSA): "Our members shouldn't be pawns in parliamentary parlour games with upper house MP's posturing to get media coverage," said Mr Little. "If upper house MP's want to know the facts they need to concentrate on getting the Premier to appear before them, or the relevant Ministers. "In a parliamentary democracy it's the elected members who call the shots and the responsibility lies with them, the buck stops there. They are accountable to the public through the electoral process as are departmental heads and senior bureaucrats. "Pulling in…

Unions NSW welcomes essential worker housing report and calls for Airbnb levy

Unions NSW has welcomed a parliamentary report into essential worker housing and called for a levy on short-term rentals to help fund housing for workers. The enquiry, chaired by Alex Greenwich MP, today found a critical lack of homes is threatening the delivery of essential services. “We strongly endorse the findings of this enquiry which highlight the urgent need for action to provide homes for essential workers,” said Unions NSW Secretary Mark Morey. The enquiry found essential workers face additional challenges securing long-term housing because of the impacts of the short-term rental market. “Essential workers are being forced out of…

NSW Govt must do more to reduce poker machine harm after damning report

The NSW government must act swiftly to protect the community after a damning report found it is failing to reduce harm from poker machines across the state’s pubs and clubs which cost $8.4billion in losses in just one year. The NSW Auditor-General’s Regulation of Gaming Machines report also revealed the number of gaming machines across the state has increased in the past two years despite an explicit legislative push to reduce the number of machines. “While the report’s findings are deeply troubling, they represent the ‘worst kept secret’ that the NSW Government is not concerned about reducing gambling harm and…
