New figures reveal surging demand for social housing in Victoria

Council to Homeless Persons 2 mins read

More than 2200 new applications for social housing across Victoria were made in just three months, according to new government data.

Homes Victoria’s latest figures show there were 63,803 applications waiting for public and community housing at the end of September 2024 – an increase of 2216 (or 3.6%) in three months.

In the same period, the priority waitlist grew by 1235 to 36,039 applications, a 3.5% jump.

Over six months, the number of applications has increased by 9.1% with 5344 more applications waiting for social housing or needing transfers.

Council to Homeless Persons has called for urgent investment in public and community housing in response to skyrocketing demand.

"Every day, more and more Victorians are being pushed into homelessness because the private rental market has failed and there isn’t enough social housing to provide a safety net,” Council to Homeless Persons CEO Deborah Di Natale said.

"Victoria already ranks last in the country on the proportion of social housing, and with demand increasing by over 9% in just six months, the situation is urgent.

"We need the Victorian government to commit to building at least 6000 public and community homes each year for a decade just to meet the current demand..

"Behind each of those applications is a real person or family who is being failed by our system, and needlessly forced to suffer. That’s especially true of the  more than 36,000 priority applications, who include the most vulnerable Victorians in desperate need, such as women with children escaping family violence.

"The ever-widening gap between the need for social housing and the amount of homes available is the sharpest tip of Victoria's housing crisis. We need urgent investment before it becomes a human catastrophe."

UK Labour shows Victoria’s isolation on gas appliance bans

8 January 2025 The Gas Appliance Manufacturers Association of Australia (GAMAA) today noted the announcement yesterday by the UK Labour Government that it is dropping proposals to force households to replace gas hot water boilers with electric heaters as recognition that such draconian approaches impose high costs, and do not enjoy public support. The Starmer Government overnight announced it was scrapping a proposal to phase out gas hot water boilers in existing premises by 2035 under the UK building code which was controversially announced by the previous government. Instead, it will focus on raising energy efficiency standards and providing information…

Boxing Day Tsunami 20 years on: Plan International Australia remembers global solidarity

Twenty years on from the devastating Boxing Day tsunami, Plan International Australia remembers the global solidarity that emerged from tragedy. December 26 marks 20 years since the Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, which claimed the lives of 230,000 people and left 1.7 million homeless on Boxing Day 2004. The earthquake struck 150km off the coast of Aceh, Indonesia. It was the most powerful the world had seen in a generation. Plan International raised US$47.3 million to assist affected people and communities focusing on childcare, education, healthcare, housing, water, sanitation, psychosocial support, livelihoods, and child protection. During this time, Plan and…

Just twelve trucks distribute food and water in North Gaza Governorate in 2.5 months

Barefoot children forced to search through rubbish for food scraps across Gaza Of the meagre 34 trucks of food and water given permission to enter the North Gaza Governorate over the last 2.5 months, deliberate delays and systematic obstructions by the Israeli military meant that just twelve managed to distribute aid to starving Palestinian civilians. For three of these, once the food and water had been delivered to the school where people were sheltering, it was then cleared and shelled within hours. Oxfam and other international humanitarian agencies have been continually prevented from delivering lifesaving aid in the North Gaza…
