UNSW School of the Arts & Media Announces 2024/25 Alumni Creative Residency Recipients

UNSW School of the Arts & Media 2 mins read

UNSW’s School of the Arts & Media (SAM) has awarded its 2024/25 Alumni Creative Residency to two exciting and innovative alumni artists - Alexandra Tálamo and Betty Grumble. The residency provides recipients with access to UNSW’s state-of-the-art facilities and expert support to develop innovative creative projects.

Alexandra Tálamo will develop a multi-disciplinary work exploring “the ghostly appearances of the Australian military on university campuses, “combining movement, installation and text to map the historical intersections between military presence and academic spaces.

Performance artist Betty Grumble will create BEAST, described as a “psychedelic” fusion of “ritual theatre, storytelling, song, dance and stand-up comedy” that investigates themes of healing and embodiment.

“The SAM Alumni Creative Residency demonstrates our ongoing commitment to supporting emerging artists at a crucial stage in their careers,” said Professor Michael Balfour, Head of the School of the Arts & Media. “This year’s recipients represent the innovative and boundary-pushing work we aim to nurture.”

Recipients receive up to two weeks of access to SAM’s comprehensive facilities, including rehearsal spaces, recording studios, and technical equipment. The residency also includes production support, industry networking opportunities and a stipend to cover project costs.

As part of the program, residents will engage with UNSW’s research and teaching community through activities such as open studios, guest lectures, or research presentations. The artists will also work with Theatre and Performance Studies students and the wider SAM community through workshops, interactive performances and open studios during their time at the Creative Practice Lab.

SAM will be opening an expression of interest in the coming months for the 2025 Creative Residency and Grant, which will take place between May and September 2025.
