AWU Urges Sugar Giant Wilmar to Stop Virtue Signalling and Start Supporting Flood Affected Staff

AWU < 1 mins read

It's time for Wilmar to win back the trust of the community and do the right thing by their employees and the sugar communities by covering the wages of their workforce who were unable to attend work due to the Northern Queensland flooding.

This is a company worth billions of dollars, who can easily afford to pay these workers without even having to sell one dinosaur bone.

“Many AWU members have been out helping their community recover from this natural disaster and if Wilmar cared about the sugar communities, they would do the right thing and pay their workers," said AWU Queensland State Secretary Stacey Schinnerl.

“Wilmar has been trumpeting how much they are helping flooded communities on their social media accounts but won't even pay their workers who are the ones on the frontline.

"Wilmar management told workers that if they wanted to get paid for the last week then they had to provide a stat dec or doctors certificate when Wilmar's own policy provides for other forms of leave to be used.

"To add insult to injury, if an employee did provide this proof and apply for personal leave as they were instructed, then this may breach the Fair Work Act, as employees weren't on personal leave, they were stood down at Wilmar's direction.

“How much more damage will Wilmar's greed do to our sugar communities?

“This is a small act that Wilmar can take to support those helping with the cleanup effort.

"Wilmar needs to stop paying lip service and start putting their money where their mouth is."

Farmers leading the charge: Renewables driving down costs and pollution in agriculture

MEDIA RELEASE – 16 June 2025 With droughts, floods and other extreme weather impacting farm profitability across the country, cutting input costs becomes even more critical to building a resilient future for Australian agriculture. On-farm renewable energy is proving to be a powerful tool to help farmers get there. Tom Warren, a grazier in the Central West NSW hosts a 20 MW solar farm, which his merino sheep graze under, and has also diversified his farm income through two smaller 100 kW solar installations he owns on his property. "I sell the power produced from the two 100 kW solar…

Gippsland dairy farmer Sandra Jefford, is working on a controlled microgrid, using solar for irrigation for her property. She can monitor how much solar is powering her operations and how much is exported to the grid. “We save significantly on power costs depending on the season. We’ve added more irrigation over…

Government tool released: Major step forward for climate – but final method still needed

Corporate Carbon Group (CCG), one of Australia’s largest and longest-operating Savanna Fire Management (SFM) project developers, welcomes the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW)’s release of the Savanna Carbon Accounting Model (SavCAM) for user testing. SavCAM is a critical development for the two new proposed SFM methods under the Australian Carbon Credit Unit (ACCU) Scheme. Its release marks a significant step forward in modernising Australia’s approach to savanna land management and ensuring emissions abatement is calculated with greater scientific precision. “We congratulate the Department on releasing SavCAM. It’s an essential tool that will help underpin the…
