CHIA welcomes allocation of grants to improve veteran housing
The Community Housing Industry Association (CHIA) has welcomed the allocation of $30 million in federal government funding to address veteran housing and homelessness.
The Department of Veterans’ Affairs today announced 13 grants have been awarded to 10 ex-service organisations and veteran-aware Community Housing Providers as part of the Veterans’ Acute Housing Program.
Part of this money is being funded by the Housing Australia Future Fund, and will include $24 million in capital works to bolster the availability of crisis and transitional housing, while another $6 million will go towards addressing risk factors for homelessness among veterans.
“This great next step in improving housing outcomes for our veterans, who are sadly more likely to experience homelessness than the general population,” CHIA CEO Wendy Hayhurst said.
“We are very much looking forward to working with these organisations as part of our Veterans’ Housing Project to help improve the wellbeing of our veterans through safe and secure housing.”
CHIA is running a three year Veterans’ Housing Project, and has set up a community of practice, designed to bring community housing organisations, experts and veterans together to develop better tools and strategies to improve outcomes for veterans.
The work is being funded by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs and the community of practice will report back to the DVA with its findings and recommendations once the project is completed.
