Family First to cut grants to councils which promote drag to kids

Family First Party 2 mins read

Family First says LGBTIQA+ drag queens are not for kids and has pledged to de-fund councils who promote them to children.

Recent events, such as the "Drag Life Drawing Out West" held at Altona Beach by the Hobson’s Bay City Council on February 1, 2025, have raised concerns among parents and community members.

If elected, Family First’s Senate team will fight to withdraw Commonwealth grants from local councils that allocate public funds to promote LGBTIQA+ drag queen events.

This is to protect children from exposure to gender-fluid and sexualised role models, which are inappropriate, especially in public spaces such as beaches.

New South Wales lead Senate candidate Lyle Shelton stated:

"Our children deserve to be nurtured in environments that respect their innocence and promote clear, consistent values.

“Using public money to fund events that blur these lines is irresponsible.

“If elected, Family First will ensure that councils prioritising such activities will no longer receive Commonwealth grants."

Family First believes that such events, even when labelled as ‘family-friendly’, introduce children to harmful concepts of gender fluidity and expose them to sexualised role models.

The party asserts that public funds should not be used to support activities that may confuse or mislead children, which is clearly the intent of the LGBTIQA+ activists who have lobbied local councils such as the Hobson’s Bay.

The same policy would apply to councils who hold drag queen story time events in local libraries.

Mr Shelton, who is also National Director of Family First, has previously highlighted the potential harms of exposing children to drag queen performances.

In an on-going landmark legal case, Shelton is defending his stance against drag queen story time events in council libraries, emphasising the need to protect children from early sexualisation and indoctrination into harmful gender-fluid concepts.

Family First urges local councils to cut any public funds allocated towards events featuring drag queens and to focus instead on initiatives that uphold mainstream family values and protect the well-being of children.

New Report Finds Federal Government Mishandling Resulted in Significant Delay to Child Sexual Abuse Programs.

In Australia, one in five boys and one in three girls are sexually abused before the age of 18. One in ten men has a history of offending against children, with the most common perpetrator being a caregiver in the home. In 2017, the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse outlined steps towards addressing this crisis, including the establishment of national support services for non-offending family members of child sex offenders and an early intervention service for those with sexual interest or behaviour towards children. Last week, the Australian National Audit Office (ANAO) released a damning report…

SMC calls for balanced governance reforms, cautions against regulatory overreach

The Super Members Council (SMC) has welcomed reforms that strengthen governance across the financial services system but cautioned against regulatory overreach that risks undermining governance practices that are delivering strong returns for members. In its detailed submission to the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority’s Governance (APRA) Review, SMC has backed a principles-based approach to good governance that empowers super funds to find the most efficient and effective ways to meet regulatory responsibilities, rather than overly prescriptive standards. In the submission, SMC supports: Proposals on regular board performance reviews, signalling the sector’s strong commitment to accountability, transparency and boosting trust among members.…

US and Israel are making the world safer

Family First supports the Israeli and US bombing of Iran’s nuclear facilities. National Director Lyle Shelton said: Their limited military action has done world a favour by stopping the world’s biggest sponsor of Islamic terrorism obtaining nuclear weapons. It is regrettable that theAlbanese Government is unable state similar support for two nations who have been and should remain strong allies of Australia. Labor under Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong is a far cry from Labor under wartime Prime Minister John Curtain and post-war External Affairs Minister “Doc” Herbert Evatt. Curtain famously said “Australia looks to America”, paving the…
