Greater Hume Council Workers Respond to “Toxic Workplace” Claims

USU < 1 mins read

Workers at Greater Hume Council have expressed disappointment at recent media characterisations labelling their workplace as "toxic".

The claims, which appeared in an article in The Border Mail discussing the departure of the General Manager, do not accurately reflect the dedication and professionalism of council staff.

"Despite the challenges of recent years, our team has consistently delivered high-quality services to the Greater Hume community," said Jason Mitchell from the United Services Union (USU) which represents workers’ at the council.

"While we acknowledge there have been frustrations regarding certain decisions and staff treatment under the outgoing General Manager's leadership, we remain committed to our work and are optimistic about the future direction of the council."

Mr Mitchell notes the recent management approach had contributed to increased staff turnover, with some employees experiencing significant personal impacts.

"There's no denying that some of our members have been deeply affected by the workplace culture that developed," Mr Mitchell said.

"However, characterising the entire council as toxic overlooks the dedication of the many employees who have continued to serve their communities with distinction."

The USU has been providing ongoing support to its members throughout this period and looks forward to working constructively with the incoming General Manager to create positive outcomes for all council staff.

The council workers remain focused on maintaining the high standards of service that Greater Hume residents expect and deserve.
