MEDIA RELEASE

Hundreds of Timber Workers to

Vote to LEAVE THE CFMEU

Hundreds of Timber Workers in the Snowy Valleys are expected to vote in a demerger ballot which will see them establish their own Union, the Timber, Furnishing and Textiles Union (TFTU).

The secret ballot run by the Australian Electoral Commission opens on the 24th of February and will run to the 14th of April.

Currently timber workers (including those making pulp and paper products) are members of the CFMEU Manufacturing Division – with that Division’s members now voting across the country to leave the CFMEU and get their own union.

“Our members have been clear, they want out of the CFMEU and are pleased to be voting ‘YES’ to becoming the TFTU” said Ms Alison Rudman, Secretary of the NSW District of the CFMEU’s Manufacturing Division.

“Members in places like Tumut and Tumbarumba are tired of being associated with the CFMEU Construction Division that is always in the news for the wrong reasons. They are looking forward to the TFTU having a laser focus on the issues that impact all our members like wood supply, recognition of their skills and protecting timber jobs in timber towns” said Ms Rudman.

“The right of timber workers to have a demerger vote was originally championed by Senator Jacqui Lambie and then taken up by the Albanese Government. The legislation that gave members this right to vote was supported by all MPs except the Greens” Ms Rudman said.

The CFMEU Manufacturing Division would be the second Division to leave the CFMEU after the Mining and Energy Division left in 2023 to form the Mining and Energy Union.

Qube Forestry Workers Move Toward Possible Industrial Action Across Three Key Tasmanian Export Facilities

MEDIA RELEASE 12 December 2025 Qube Forestry in Tasmania is now facing the prospect of industrial action at three of its major export log facilities — Burnie, Bell Bay and Hobart — as members of the Timber, Furnishing and Textiles Union (TFTU) move to progress a protected action ballot. Tasmanian District Secretary Danny Murphy said the union has been bargaining in good faith for months, but Qube has failed to put forward an acceptable offer for workers. “We have been bargaining in good faith with Qube for months and we are still far from finalising a fair deal for our…

AWU members instruct union to explore protected industrial action after Glencore breaks faith after $600m taxpayer bailout

The Australian Workers’ Union (AWU) has condemned Glencore for returning to the bargaining table with an offer described by workers as insulting, unsustainable, and a betrayal of the commitment they showed during months of uncertainty at the North Queensland Copper Refinery. As a consequence members have instructed the AWU to begin the process of taking protected industrial action. The company secured a $600 million taxpayer-funded support package in October to keep operations afloat for the next three years. AWU members stood shoulder to shoulder with Glencore during that campaign, advocating publicly for government intervention to protect jobs and stabilise the…

University Senate report highlights landmark reform options: NTEU

The National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) has urged the federal government to implement the recommendations from a historic Senate inquiry into university governance. The Senate Education and Employment Legislation Committee on Thursday released its final report, which has a further eight recommendations building on the 12 from September’s interim findings. The final report calls for measures to address major crisis points in the sector including casualisation and wage theft.
