Is your bookkeeper your secret Valentine? New research reveals surprising bonds between Aussie business owners and their accountants

Intuit QuickBooks < 1 min read

Romance isn’t just blossoming this Valentine’s Day—it might be balancing your books too!

New research by Intuit QuickBooks has uncovered a surprising connection: nearly one-third (32%) of Australian small business owners admit to being emotionally attached to their bookkeeper/accountant, with almost half (45%) confiding in them beyond financial matters.

Some even share their biggest secrets—whether it’s shopping habits (35%) or family confessions (9%).

Interestingly, nearly half (46%) of Aussie small business owners spend less than three hours a week with their actual partner, which is only 25 minutes a day.

Texting more with your bookkeeper than your Valentine?
Love and loyalty aren’t just reserved for romance. Over a quarter (28%) of small business owners admit to texting their accountant/bookkeeper at least once per day, with two-in-five (40%) trusting them more than their own friends and family when it comes to business matters.

More than just numbers—how bookkeepers are saving love lives
It turns out that bookkeepers/accountants aren’t just crunching numbers; they’re helping business owners in ways you wouldn’t expect:

  • 15% say their bookkeeper/accountant improves their love life by reducing financial stress.

  • Nearly a third (29%) save between $5,001 - $10,000 per year thanks to their accountant/bookkeeper.

  • 53% say their bookkeeper/accountant helps ease anxiety and provides comfort.

  • 44% feel more confident thanks to their accountant/bookkeeper.

If you’d like to explore this unconventional love story, we can offer you:

  • An interview or exclusive commentary with a case study who shares their personal experience and close relationship with their bookkeeper/accountant.

  • An interview or exclusive commentary with a spokesperson at Intuit QuickBooks Australia, on why small business owners are leaning on their bookkeepers/accountants now more than ever.
