The Kimberley Aboriginal Women’s Council (KAWC) will today launch its 2025-2027 Strategic Plan at Federal Parliament House in Canberra, ensuring that Aboriginal women’s leadership, rights, and self-determination are firmly on the national agenda ahead of the upcoming elections.

The plan outlines KAWC’s commitment to women’s leadership, grassroots empowerment, cultural security, and systems reform, with a strong focus on strengthening the Aboriginal community-controlled sector, fostering self-determination and advancing Closing the Gap priorities. It also highlights key initiatives, including the Women’s Leadership Program, Rise & Shine Mentoring Program for Kimberley Aboriginal girls, and the Organisational Strategic Development Program, all designed to create long-term social, cultural, and economic benefits for Aboriginal women and their communities.

KAWC Chairperson Selena O’Meara emphasised the importance of launching the plan at Parliament House:

"Launching our strategic plan at the Federal Parliament House before the elections ensures that our vision for Aboriginal women’s leadership, rights, and self-determination is heard at the highest level. This is a pivotal moment to engage decision-makers, influence policy, and secure commitments that will drive lasting change for our communities."

KAWC CEO Janine Dureau highlighted the plan’s role in creating tangible impact:

"Investing in Aboriginal women's leadership is investing in stronger communities, better policies, and lasting change. When Aboriginal women are empowered to lead, they drive solutions that create social, cultural, and economic benefits for all Australians. It’s time for the Federal Government to back our leadership and amplify our impact."

The launch event will bring together policymakers, community leaders, and key stakeholders to discuss how government and industry can support Aboriginal women’s leadership and self-determination.

Investment in childcare innovation will support rural, regional and remote communities, and Indigenous families and kids

Moriarty Foundation has welcomed a commitment to delivering early childhood education and care options in regional and rural areas, as good news for Indigenous families in remote communities. Moriarty Foundation Co-Founder and Executive Director Ros Moriarty said the Coalition’s $100 million Raising the Regions Program would support not-for-profits like Indi Kindi. “Indi Kindi is Moriarty Foundation’s early childhood program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island children, which is designed and led by local communities and delivered on Country,” said Ms Moriarty. “The current childcare funding model only supports mainstream early learning services, and the long daycare model does not suit…
