Media alert: newsroom training for NT journalists reporting on violence against women

Our Watch < 1 mins read

Journalists and media professionals in the Northern Territory are invited to a free online newsroom training session on the positive influence media can have on preventing violence against women.

Hosted by Australia’s national violence against women and their children prevention organisation, Our Watch, the training is for NT-based journalists and media professionals looking to better understand and help prevent violence against women through their reporting.

The training:

  • provides an overview of the crisis of violence against women, what drives it and the media’s role in preventing it;

  • explores what good practice reporting on the issue is, drawing on what evidence shows works to prevent further violence;

  • and how to report in a culturally safe way.

The session is particularly relevant to local journalists with the shockingly high rates of violence against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women in the NT. Two First Nations women have reportedly been killed by male violence in Alice Springs already this year, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women are 31 times more likely to be hospitalised due to family violence–related assaults.

The interactive training will be opened by the CEO of Women's Safety Services of Central Australia (WoSCCA) Larissa Ellis.
