Monash Expert: New changes in vehicle safety regulations

Monash University Accident Research Centre < 1 mins read

Starting on 1 March 2025, a crucial shift in vehicle safety regulations will come into effect in Australia, and will require popular car brands to discontinue several models. The change stems from the implementation of Australian Design Rule (ADR) 98/00, which mandates that all new vehicles sold in the country must be equipped with standard car-to-car autonomous emergency braking (AEB).

  • Implementation of advanced vehicle safety technologies
  • Effectiveness of vehicle safety technologies

The following can be attributed to Dr D’Elia:

“The implementation of advanced vehicle safety technologies, such as autonomous emergency braking (AEB), has the potential to significantly reduce road trauma and save lives across Australia.

“Data shows that equipping vehicles with AEB significantly reduces crash risk and injuries, particularly for novice drivers. The most impactful time for improving safety is when a vehicle first enters the fleet, as the safety features installed at this stage have the greatest long-term effect.

“Ensuring vehicles are fitted with advanced vehicle safety technologies, such as AEB, can protect both vehicle occupants and vulnerable road users. Mandating such technologies can speed up their integration into the vehicle fleet, leading to significant savings in road trauma and related social costs.”
