Statement regarding Whyalla steelworks

Australian Workers' Union < 1 mins read

Paul Farrow, AWU National Secretary:

The Australian Workers’ Union strongly backs urgent government intervention to secure the future of Whyalla Steelworks and its workforce. The steelworks is a critical pillar of Australian industry, and the reckless financial mismanagement of GFG Alliance cannot be allowed to jeopardise its survival.

Placing Whyalla Steelworks into administration is the right move to stabilise the business and pave the way for a long-term transition to green steel. The AWU calls on the Federal and South Australian governments to act swiftly and decisively to take back control of the plant, protect thousands of jobs, and ensure Australia remains a leader in steel manufacturing.

A structured rescue plan,  including strategic government support to facilitate new private investment, is essential.

Without immediate action, Australia loses a critical sovereign capability relied on by its construction, infrastructure and manufacturing industries. It jeopardises many thousands of jobs - on site and up and down supply chains. And it risks losing a generational opportunity to reindustrialise and lead the world in green iron and steel production.

Tens of thousands of households rely on the steelworks and any disruption would be an absolute disaster.

Long-term, Australia’s economic sovereignty hinges on the Whyalla steelworks remaining operational. Without Whyalla we will be forced to rely on China for long steel. That would be catastrophic.

The AWU will be working closely with current management, the South Australian government and the federal government to ensure continuity of operations at Whyalla.

Social media use among Australian children aged 10 to 15 is almost universal and accompanied by high rates of exposure to online harms on a wide range of platforms and services, according to eSafety’s latest research report. The report shows 96 per cent of children in this age group had used at least one social media platform, with 7 in 10 saying they had encountered content associated with harm online. This included exposure to misogynistic or hateful material, dangerous online challenges, violent fight videos, and content promoting disordered eating and suicide. Three quarters of these children said they most recently…
