Applications open for the Don Bank Museum Writer in Residence Program

North Sydney Council < 1 mins read

Writers seeking a dedicated space to focus on their craft can now apply for the Don Bank Museum Writer in Residence Program. Applications close on Monday 14 April.

North Sydney Mayor Zoë Baker said, “Don Bank Museum is an oasis within the North Sydney CBD – a place for reflection and inspiration. It is an incredibly special space for writers to escape distractions and immerse themselves in their craft. Council is committed to supporting art, creativity and culture and is truly pleased to provide a creative space for writers and urges all writers with a passion for their craft to apply."

Located in the heritage-listed museum, the program provides a dedicated studio for writers of poetry, fiction, non-fiction, memoir, and plays to develop their work while engaging with the local literary community.

The successful applicant will also receive a one-hour consultation with a publisher from Penguin Random House, access to Stanton Library’s collections and services, and opportunities to contribute to North Sydney’s cultural life through writing workshops and events.

The 2024 Writer in Residence Denise O’Hagan reflected on her experience, saying, “There is a special feeling that comes with settling down to work in the beautifully maintained and peaceful Don Bank Museum. Surrounded by many original artefacts of the former home, with the giant magnolia gracing the entrance, I felt as if I were stepping into an enchanted space free of common daily distractions – the perfect inner-city haven for any writer or artist. I was able to complete my third poetry manuscript in an unhurried and harmonious setting and play an active role in the local literary community through mentoring of selected writers.”
