  • Federal Government announces a national food security strategy, pledging $3.5 million in funding
  • Government calls out climate change as a key risk to food security
  • The strategy will be independently overseen by a National Food Council

Farmers for Climate Action (FCA), representing more than 8,400 farmer members, welcomes the Federal Government’s announcement to develop a national food security strategy, Feeding Australia.

FCA applauds the Government for calling out climate change as a key factor affecting Australian farming and food security.

FCA is encouraged by the establishment of an independent National Food Council comprised of experts from industry and the community, to ensure the $3.5 million strategy is non-partisan.

FCA CEO Natalie Collard said the plan to work with farmers and industry experts, while addressing the growing impact of droughts, fires, and floods worsened by climate change, is to be applauded.

“Food security is national security,” Ms Collard said.

“Farmers grow our food and farmers need a stable climate. A strategy that incorporates practical, science-backed solutions—including support for regenerative and climate-smart agriculture—is a great start.”

“A focus on greater food supply, stronger food security, and sustainable agriculture will help safeguard farmers’ livelihoods and provide greater certainty for consumers,” Ms Collard said.

FCA also welcomes the Government’s commitment to exploring the potential of a biofuels feedstock industry as Australia reduces its emissions and continues exporting its clean, green produce.

FCA looks forward to working alongside farmers, industry leaders, and policymakers to ensure the strategy delivers practical, long-term benefits for rural and regional communities.

"Recognising the reality that climate change affects food security is a vital step towards a strong and secure food supply.”

EPA SECURES ENFORCEABLE UNDERTAKING WITH CONCRETE COMPANY FOLLOWING INVESTIGATION

The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has agreed to a $100,000 Enforceable Undertaking (EU) with Reinforced Concrete Pipes Australia (NSW) Pty Ltd (RCPA), following an investigation into unlicensed concrete works at its Somersby facility. The EPA began investigating RCPA when the company applied for an Environment Protection Licence in December 2022 and discovered it had produced more than 30,000 tonnes of steel-reinforced concrete pipes annually between 2018 and 2022, without a licence. EPA Executive Director of Operations, Jason Gordon, said the EPA’s findings highlight the risks of operating without proper environmental approvals and the importance of regulatory oversight. “RCPA produced…

Australian gas industry expansion funded by taxpayers in Japan and South Korea: new report

Public finance institutions in Japan and South Korea, funded by taxpayers in those countries, have poured US$20.5 billion into Australian gas export projects since 2008, underwriting the commercial viability of risky, climate-damaging gas projects, a new report reveals. Released today by Jubilee Australia, the Australian Conservation Foundation and the Fossil Free Japan Coalition, the report exposes the extent of the Japanese and Korean governments’ heavy investment in the extraction, processing, transport and deployment of Australian gas – and the Australian government’s enabling of this strategy. The report shows: Japan and Korea contributed US$20.5 billion to Australian gas projects from 2008…
