From the dinner table to the rescue frontline – Aussies step up to help

A powerful collective of influential Australians is rallying behind Destiny Rescue’s Give Up a Meal campaign, urging the nation to join a simple yet life-changing initiative aimed at rescuing children from sexual exploitation.

Among those championing the cause are beloved artist Dami Im, finance expert Victoria Devine, bestselling author and motivational speaker Melissa Ambrosini alongside her husband Nick Broadhurst. Joining them is US-based artist Svrcina, who brings an international voice to the campaign.

At the heart of this collective is the shared mission to combat child exploitation, with each advocate using their platform to raise awareness and inspire action.

For Dami Im, who has been a proud ambassador for Destiny Rescue since March 2023, the cause is deeply personal.

“This cause is so close to my heart. As a parent, I can’t imagine my child living in fear or exploitation. By donating the cost of just one meal, we can help rescue children and give them the safety, love, and hope they deserve,” Dami said.

The Give Up a Meal campaign encourages Australians to donate the cost of a single meal to fund rescue missions and post-rescue care for vulnerable children.

“Destiny Rescue’s work goes far beyond the initial rescue. They don’t just remove children from danger; they provide the tools and support these kids need to build brighter futures,” Dami added.

“Families of rescued children are often given resources to start small businesses, ensuring long-term stability and independence. It’s life-changing work, and I’m proud to be part of it.”

With a broad spectrum of voices supporting the campaign, Destiny Rescue CEO Paul Mergard sees the collective effort as a pivotal moment to drive change.

“Give Up a Meal is a simple but powerful way to make a difference. Every donation directly supports rescue missions and provides essential post-rescue care, from safe housing to education and vocational training. These contributions don’t just save lives — they transform them,” Paul said.

Destiny Rescue, founded on the Sunshine Coast in 2001, operates in 12 countries globally and has rescued thousands of children from exploitation. In 2024 alone, the organisation rescued 4,177 individuals, including 1,876 children.

Each of the campaign’s advocates is leveraging their platform to create personal fundraising pages and share the message. Australians are encouraged to donate through these pages and amplify the campaign’s reach.

Astounded: More dollars for everyone except those with the least

ACOSS CEO, Dr Cassandra Goldie said: “We always knew this was going to be an election budget. In the lead up, we have welcomed some important investments in essential services, including health, public education and early childhood education. “We’re astounded that the centrepiece of tonight’s budget is more dollars for everyone except those with the least. “Only a year after the last tax cuts, the government is announcing a new set. “We need a budget and an election that sets us up for the future. The last thing we need is a bidding war on more tax cuts. “In the…

Homelessness Australia welcomes peak body funding in Federal Budget Homelessness Australia has welcomed the Federal Government’s inclusion of $6.2 million in homelessness peak body funding over three years in the Federal Budget. “If Australia is going to solve homelessness, we need to draw on the policy, research and wisdom of people working to respond to homelessness and people with lived experience of homelessness,” CEO of Homelessness Australia Kate Colvin said. “To solve homelessness, we also need to invest in the capacity of homelessness services to share knowledge and best practice to continually improve homelessness services. “This important funding commitment will…
