La Trobe University $10.7 million wage theft revelations underline need for sector wide governance reform

NTEU < 1 mins read

Today’s revelation La Trobe University underpaid 6774 of its staff to the tune of $10 million underlines the need for a sector wide governance reform, says the union which represents university staff, the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU).

The wage theft headlines come only days after media reports Australian National University Chancellor Julie Bishop awarded consulting contracts to her long-time friend and former political staffer, in a potential conflict of interest.

“Someone needs to throw open the windows of the university sector and let some fresh air and sunlight in, there is a governance crisis,” said National NTEU Secretary Dr Alison Barnes.

“Today’s wage theft revelations of over $10 million stolen from 6774 staff at La Trobe University can just be added to the long list, in the last few years we’ve seen 154,872 University workers rorted out of almost $271 million, with potentially another $100m plus still to be exposed.

“There is something very rotten in the state of Denmark when on an almost weekly basis we have governance revelations like this, the entire sector needs a total review.

“We’ve been saying for years Universities’ are the only multibillion dollar organisations in the country which have no real oversight, and finally people are starting to listen.

Today’s revelations have also appalled Sarah Roberts, NTEU Victorian Division Secretary.

“The Senate is rightly about to undertake an inquiry into university governance - it can't come soon enough,” said Ms Roberts.

Warning issued to workers ahead of peak-season underpayments

New analysis from Unions NSW indicates that workers forgoing just one hour of penalty rates over the Christmas and New Year period could amount to more than $30 million in lost wages. A statewide compliance push over December and January is underway amid growing concerns employers will test the boundaries on pay and conditions during the Christmas rush. Assistant Secretary of Unions NSW Thomas Costa said the advice to workers is simple: in a cost of living crisis workers should not just know their rights, but enforce them. “Every year we see employers try to shave a little off public…

MEU welcomes court decision confirming full rights of workplace delegates

The Mining and Energy Union has welcomed today’s Federal Court decision confirming that the Closing Loopholes laws give workplace delegates the right to represent workers on site regardless of labour hire or employment arrangements, delivering a significant win for workers and their unions across Australia. The decision follows a legal challenge brought by the MEU, with the support of the ACTU and its affiliates, after the Fair Work Commission inserted a delegates’ rights clause into modern awards that significantly limited the scope of the rights Parliament intended to provide. Under the Closing Loopholes legislation, workplace delegates were granted new statutory rights…

New report: Hundreds of Pacific workers in Australia would never report mistreatment

National survey of workers in Pacific Australia Labour Mobility scheme reveals widespread fear of retaliation if they speak up. The Pacific Australia Labour Mobility scheme was established to provide economic opportunity for temporary migrants from the Pacific and address labour shortages in specified sectors in Australia. However, elements of its highly regulated structure have had the unintended consequences of leaving participants open to exploitation without realistic avenues for redress. These are the disturbing findings of a new survey of 370 PALM scheme workers conducted by the Migrant Justice Institute – a national research and policy organisation supported by University of…
