Nature lovers around Australia will soon be raising a cup, mug or glass to give nature a much-needed pick-me-up.
Not-for-profit conservation organisation Bush Heritage Australia is inviting nature lovers to take part in ‘Cuppa for the Bush’ on Tuesday 4 March.
By donating the price of their favourite coffee, tea, chai or hot chocolate on the day, supporters will be helping protect precious animals and plants in landscapes around Australia, from the smallest ant to the tallest tree.
All donations made for Cuppa for the Bush will go towards Bush Heritage’s conservation work across the country, where it is needed most. The organisation is on a mission to deepen and double its impact by 2030, protecting, restoring and regenerating a total of 30 million hectares of land (an area larger than the state of Victoria).
Bush Heritage Australia CEO Rachel Lowry says:
“Our natural landscapes and wildlife are in real need of urgent help. That can feel very overwhelming to a lot of people, but Cuppa for the Bush gives people the chance to take a daily habit – having a cuppa – and turn it into a small but impactful contribution for nature. By donating as little as $5 you can make a huge difference to our conservation efforts and help us protect the bush for future generations.”
A cuppa sized donation of $5 will pay for a native plant seedling for a future revegetation project. A donation equivalent to a week’s worth of cuppas ($35) can pay for a nestbox for a native parrot to call home, or two weeks’ worth of cuppas ($70) can buy two small mammal nest boxes for species like pygmy possums. A month’s worth a cuppas ($150) can help Bush Heritage buy a sound recorder to find and protect more endangered birds.
After an enormously successful Cuppa for the Bush in 2024, which included smashing the fundraising target within hours of the campaign starting, Bush Heritage is hoping to raise 250,000 dollars on 4 March 2025.
A group of major donors have already pledged to match donations made on the day, for a limited time, helping every cuppa-sized contribution go further.
“We’re a nation of tea and coffee drinkers, but we’re also a nation of nature lovers,” Lowry says.
“One in four Australians say they can’t survive the day without coffee. No one can survive without biodiversity. On the 4 March, make your cup of coffee, tea or hot chocolate a moment for you, and a moment for the bush.”
‘Cuppa for the Bush’ launches on Tuesday 4 March and runs from 7am to 7pm.
