NUCLEAR FOR AUSTRALIA CALLS FOR FACT-BASED DEBATE NOT FEARMONGERING AS ANTI-NUCLEAR PROTESTERS TARGET BHP

Nuclear for Australia 2 mins read

Melbourne, Australia – Nuclear for Australia calls for fact-based debate, not fearmongering, as anti-nuclear protesters target BHP.

This statement comes as a group of anti-nuclear protesters gathered outside BHP's Australian headquarters yesterday, voicing opposition to uranium mining and nuclear power.

The protesters' actions highlight a persistent challenge in Australia's energy debate: misinformation continues to overshadow evidence.

Claims about the dangers of nuclear power and uranium mining often ignore the reality of its safety record, economic potential, and role in addressing climate change.

Nuclear energy remains one of the safest, most reliable, and low-emission energy sources available globally, yet outdated fears persist in shaping public perception.

"Yesterday’s protest at BHP is a clear example of how emotion can drown out reason," said Will Shackel, founder of Nuclear for Australia. "We're not asking for blind acceptance of nuclear power; we're asking for an honest conversation based on data, not decades-old scare tactics. Australia deserves an energy future informed by facts, not fear.”

Effective energy policy is critical for Australia’s future. Nuclear for Australia calls on all stakeholders—protesters, policymakers, and the public—to engage in a mature discussion. All options in this debate deserve scrutiny, but fearmongering serves no one.

“We challenge the protesters to look at the evidence: nuclear power plants are emissions-free during operation and have the lowest lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions. Nuclear provides around 25% of global clean electricity, more than solar or wind, and is expected to play an increasing role in global decarbonisation,” Shackel added.

Nuclear for Australia remains committed to fostering an informed public dialogue. We invite protesters and sceptics alike to examine the facts with us so that together, we can build a sustainable, prosperous energy future for all Australians.

Liberals Against Nuclear

Liberals must abandon unpopular nuclear policy and return to winning formula

The Liberal Party's conspicuous silence on nuclear energy in its advertising confirms the policy does not have internal party support, is electoral poison and must be dumped. An analysis of Meta's advertising library published today in the Nine newspapers reveals the Liberal Party has not used the word "nuclear" in any of its 24 paid social media advertisements currently running, having last funded promotion of its nuclear power policy in November 2024. Additionally, it was revealed earlier this week that only nine of the Coalition's candidates for the upcoming election are promoting nuclear energy on their campaign websites. "The Liberal…
