Rising Tide climate protesters confront Dutton at XXXX Brewery

Rising Tide 2 mins read

BRISBANE, Saturday 28 March - Protesters from Rising Tide have today confronted Opposition Leader Peter Dutton at Brisbane’s XXXX Brewery as he departed his campaign launch brandishing a banner reading “NO NEW NUCLEAR OR GAS”.

Rising Tide protester Natalie Lindner confronted the Coalition leader unfurling the banner and asking Mr Dutton “Nuclear and gas will drive up energy bills. Why are you lying to the Australian people.”

This is the fifth bird-dogging protest in the last fortnight that Rising Tide has made, after disrupting Angus Taylor’s press conference, Peter Dutton’s Lowy Institute speech, Jim Chalmers’ pre-budget speech, and the Liberal Party fundraiser.

“The Coalition’s scheme to force nuclear into Australia’s energy grid is going to cost $600 billion to the taxpayer, add up to $1,200 to people’s energy bills, and produce 1.6 billion tonnes of climate pollution by 2050,” said Rising Tide activist Natalie from Brisbane

“Dutton’s nuclear scheme will actively worsen the cost of living and climate crisis.”

“We have just seen with ex tropical cyclone Alfred what the climate crisis is already doing to Australian communities. We cannot afford more distraction and delay with ridiculous energy policies like nuclear.”

“Dutton himself knows it’s an unpopular policy, that’s why he and the party are doing their best not to talk about it. Even Liberal Party members are campaigning against their own party now, because they see how bad of an idea it is.”

Climate action is vital to four in five young voters

Four in five young voters say climate change is important in deciding who they’ll vote for in the federal election, finds a new YouGov poll. Not far behind are women (of all ages), with seven in ten nominating the importance of climate action in deciding their vote on May 3. The polling also reveals younger people don’t believe nuclear power will lower their power bills quickly with only one in ten Millennials (10%) saying nuclear will reduce their bills the fastest. The poll of 1622 Australian voters of all ages and genders was commissioned by Solutions For Climate Australia, the…

EPA FINES M8 WATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR $60,000 FOR ALLEGED COOKS RIVER POLLUTION

The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has fined the operator of the M8 Operational Water Treatment Plant (OWTP), WCX M5 PT Pty Limited (WCX), $60,000 following the alleged discharge of contaminated groundwater into the Cooks River in September 2024. The water treatment plant treats groundwater that is collected from the M8 tunnels. WCX received two penalty notices after a faulty valve at the plant led to approximately 792 kilolitres of untreated and partially treated groundwater bypassing the treatment system and discharging into a drain connected to the river. That volume of water is equivalent to nearly a third of an…

‘No new coal and gas’ a major test for next parliament

In response to news the Greens would make ‘no new coal and gas’ a key demand in the event of minority government negotiations, the Australian Conservation Foundation’s CEO Kelly O’Shanassy said: “Approving new coal and gas projects is the opposite of climate action, so we commend the Greens for identifying a halt to new climate-wrecking fossil fuel mines as a negotiating priority. “In an era of escalating climate change, when global scientists and the International Energy Agency have called for no new fossil fuel projects, it is grossly irresponsible to keep approving new coal and gas mines. “It was shocking…
