The Rapid Relief Team (RRT) was on hand to feed hungry steppers at the Great Illawarra Walk, as they walked from Shellharbour to Austinmer to raise money for a local children’s charity.

The 547 participants walked as much as 40 kilometres on the event day, raising $92,000 for KidsWish – an Illawarra-based charity that provides support for children living with disability or illness.

A crew of 22 RRT volunteers supported the cause by cooking and serving 400 Signature Burgers, 150 barista-made coffees and countless icy poles to participants.

RRT Local Team Leader Paul Gage said the Great Illawarra Walk is much-loved by the local community.

“It is a brilliant event that brings the Illawarra community together for a great day out for a good cause, and RRT is delighted to be able to support the Great Illawarra Walk for a fourth year,” Paul said.

Great Illawarra Walk organiser Chris Lovatt thanked RRT for the support.

“We are so pleased to have RRT as part of our program again this year. At the end of their walk, our participants are delighted to be welcomed over the finish line with one of their delicious burgers, a cold drink or icy-pole, and a friendly smile.”

As the charitable arm of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church, RRT supports frontline workers and emergency services by providing food, donations and other resources, as well as hosting events for the community.

Established in 2013 to assist emergency services in times of disaster and crisis by providing meals and other support, it’s expanded to more than 16,000 volunteers and provides support to the community through charitable donations and events.
