New Physio-Led Approach to Pain Management Includes Sleep as a Key Factor
WHO: Peter Allen – Physiotherapist
WHEN: Available for live and pre-recorded interviews ahead of World Sleep Day (Friday, March 14, 2025)
WHAT:
A world-first physiotherapy-led approach is putting sleep at the forefront of chronic pain management. Despite strong evidence linking poor sleep to pain and inflammation, sleep is rarely addressed in physiotherapy.
Now, an Australian team of medical professionals—including physiotherapists, neurosurgeons, and sleep specialists—is developing a new model of care designed to:
- Identify and screen for sleep disorders in chronic pain patients.
- Train physiotherapists to prescribe bed support and sleeping posture adjustments.
- Reduce reliance on painkillers and invasive treatments.
Early studies have shown life-changing improvements in pain levels and mobility for patients using this approach.
WHY:
- Chronic pain affects 3.6 million Australians*—yet sleep is rarely considered as part of the treatment.
- Patients with poor sleep have heightened pain sensitivity—addressing sleep may reduce reliance on opioids and surgery.
- Physiotherapists see patients regularly—this model equips them with tools to create a significant impact early.
