Yallourn workers need certainty, not political games

Mining and Energy Union < 1 mins read

The Mining and Energy Union Victorian District is urging the Victorian State Government and Energy Australia to come together in productive and transparent discussions over the future of Yallourn Power Station and its workforce.

Workers at Yallourn are distressed by the contradictory statements in the media regarding the future of the Station and are demanding certainty regarding the future of their jobs and community from the State Government and Energy Australia.

Andy Smith, President of the MEU Victorian District which represents power station workers at Yallourn and throughout the Latrobe Valley, is calling for any future discussions to be transparent, involve workers, and aim for a just outcome for workers and their community:

“It is unacceptable for the Victorian Government and Energy Australia to be playing games with people’s livelihoods, and with the economic health of the Latrobe Valley” Smith said.

“We are facing an uncertain future, with workers’ livelihoods at stake in a region with no new industry and very little opportunity for transition into comparable roles. Under these difficult circumstances, it is imperative that government and industry deals in fact and acts in consultation with workers – not litigate through the media.”

Yallourn Power Station is scheduled to close in 2028.

Warning issued to workers ahead of peak-season underpayments

New analysis from Unions NSW indicates that workers forgoing just one hour of penalty rates over the Christmas and New Year period could amount to more than $30 million in lost wages. A statewide compliance push over December and January is underway amid growing concerns employers will test the boundaries on pay and conditions during the Christmas rush. Assistant Secretary of Unions NSW Thomas Costa said the advice to workers is simple: in a cost of living crisis workers should not just know their rights, but enforce them. “Every year we see employers try to shave a little off public…

Talent Alert: Experts and case study available for interview on CSIRO GenCost Draft 2025-26 Report

Wednesday 17 December For immediate release. CSIRO’s Draft 2025-26 GenCost Report, released today, has once again found that renewables (solar and onshore wind) are set to form the lowest cost electricity generation mix for Australia through to 2050. The new CSIRO and AEMO modelling confirms electricity generation costs would be a third lower with an 82% renewable grid, while building a new coal-fired power station today would deliver electricity for at least double the cost of solar and wind. Today’s report underscores that the pace of the shift to clean energy must increase, to secure a stable electricity grid and…
