Bega entrepreneur with cerebral palsy launches innovative social media app

Just three years ago Bega man Nathan Johnston launched accessible social media network, Disability Club.

The app has been in development for about a year and unlike many apps, it’s been designed to be accessible for people of all abilities.

“It was always our intention to have an app from the very beginning of Disability Club concept planning,” Nathan said.

“The mobile app incorporates all features of the web version and enables our users to be instantly notified about their friend’s messages, news and events.

“With the option for instant push notifications users can communicate conveniently and access information on the go.”

It wasn't an easy task.

To launch the app the web version of the network needed to be redesigned and rebuilt.

Nathan worked with a team of developers, designers and software engineers to get it up and running.

While other people might have thrown it in the too-hard basket, Nathan, who has cerebral palsy, knew the payoff would be worth it.

“Having the app makes Disability Club more accessible from anywhere in the world,” he said.

“I hope it becomes the number one social media network for individuals with disabilities – and without disabilities.

“It’s an all-inclusive platform and with instant, easy and safe access from mobile devices the user has the power within their hands.”

The app is now available to users worldwide.

The development of the Disability Club mobile app along with the rebuild of the Web version was supported by the Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal.
