Campaign for Liberals to drop nuclear reactors

Solutions For Climate 2 mins read

Grassroots advocacy escalates to a radio campaign that calls on Liberal Party to drop its nuclear ambitions

As the Liberal National Party increasingly stops talking about its high-cost nuclear policies, Australia's grassroots climate movement is taking its campaign to the next level.

Following months of community action - including more than 70 local events, tens of thousands of yard signs, and countless conversations at front doors and community markets across the nation - Solutions for Climate Australia today launches a radio advertising campaign that will be beamed into Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth FM radio and open to the sound of an WW2 air raid siren and a voiceover that says:

“This is a nuclear warning. Adding nuclear to Australia’s energy mix will cost taxpayers six hundred billion dollars and could double the size of our power bills. Australia gets more sunlight than any other country. And it’s free. Rejecting nuclear is a no-brainer for Australia.”

"This campaign amplifies what we've been hearing at kitchen tables and community halls across Australia," said Dr Barry Traill, Director of Solutions for Climate Australia.

"Through 70+ local events and countless conversations, Australians have made it clear they want affordable energy from wind and solar - not radioactive white elephants that would take decades and billions to build.

“It’s become clear in the last month that Liberal Party MPs and candidates now don’t want to talk about their own nuclear policies. Australians are clocking that they would be costly, and lead to massively increased climate pollution and more extreme weather climate disasters, while we wait decades for them to be built.

“We are hoping that this campaign will persuade the Liberal Party to reflect, and formally withdraw their unpopular nuclear policies.”

These radio ads build on remarkable grassroots advocacy across Australia that includes:

📢Tens of thousands of yard signs distributed coast-to-coast

🏡Volunteer teams letterboxing and doorknocking in strategic locations

🗣️Community forums uniting Australians concerned about climate action and energy

"The nuclear push isn't just bad policy - it's clearly out of touch with what communities want," Dr Traill added.

"We urge Mr. Dutton and other Coalition leaders to formally shift from their nuclear reactor policies and detail policies that support clean, reliable renewable energy."

Gas decision leaves Aussies exposed to more price hikes

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEFRIDAY 20 MARCH, 2026 TheAlbanese Government has just approved a new gas export project, leaving Australians highly exposed to volatile international markets and rising costs of living. The project is approved until 2081 – more than three decades after Australia plans to finish its switch to clean energy – and brings the Albanese Government’s tally of new climate-polluting projects to 36 coal, oil and gas projects approved since 2022. Climate Councillor Greg Bourne said: “Digging up and exporting more gas directly exposes Australians to price hikes driven by global conflict, as we're seeing play out right now. Since…

‘No more war profits for Big Gas’: Greenpeace backs Government signal on taxing gas corporations

Greenpeace Australia Pacific has welcomed reports that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s department is considering options to tax the profits gas companies are making from the war in the Middle East, praising the move as strong leadership in a time of war, climate disruption and a cost‑of‑living crisis. DavidRitter, Chief Executive Officer at Greenpeace Australia Pacific, said:“The Albanese Government deserves due credit for standing up to gas corporations like Woodside and Santos as Australia faces a cost-of-living crisis, created by dependence on fossil fuels like gas. “For years, rent-seeking gas companies have used every geopolitical shock as an excuse to demand…
