Free trees? Yes, please!

City of Sydney 2 mins read

City of Sydney residents will be the VIPs this Saturday at a free tree giveaway that’s helping to grow a greener future.

The City of Sydney is offering 1,000 small, medium and large native and exotic trees to locals who will be able to take home up to two each.

Lord Mayor of Sydney, Clover Moore AO said the giveaway was an effort to bring the health and cooling benefits of trees to more parts of the area and reach the City of Sydney’s goal of 27% tree canopy cover by 2050.

“This is such a great chance for our residents to help us boost tree cover locally and introduce the benefits of trees to their homes,” the Lord Mayor said.

“Last year, we planted more than 1,000 trees in our streets and parks as we continue our work to green our city, improve air quality and give birds and animals more habitat.

“We’re running out of space to plant street and park trees, and this is why we are helping residents green private land.

“If you have some balcony space, a spot in your backyard or even a terrace or common area at your apartment building that needs some green love, we encourage you to come to Sydney Park this Saturday.”

Some of the species available are weeping bottlebrush, heath banksia, red flowering gum, lemon myrtle, Chinese hibiscus, silk and lemon trees.

Urban tree experts will be on hand to give lucky green thumbs some tips about how to care for the newest additions to their home.

The event begins at 9am at Sydney Park, at the carpark next to the skate park on Sydney Park Road.

City of Sydney residents will need to show photo ID. The giveaway will run until the trees are gone.
