Media are invited to attend an event in Wollongongtoday at 11.30am, Wednesday April 16, as grassroots groups, including local group Good for the Gong, call for a Local Energy Hub for the Illawarra at an empty shop front on the Crown Street Mall.

Supported by Community Power Agency, RE-Alliance and Yes2Renewables, the pop-up event will offer a glimpse of what a Local Energy Hub could mean for the region: a face-to-face resource centre providing trusted, accurate information for those living in renewable energy regions like the Illawarra.

Good for the Gong is an independent, non-partisan group of Illawarra locals who are working to progress climate action. They want to see renewable energy projects in the region that set the highest standards for environmental and community benefits.

Community groups across Australia have been calling on the Federal Government to fund Local Energy Hubs in regional communities.

Local Energy Hubs would be housed in a physical space like the many empty shop fronts scattered across regional centres, complemented by outreach services. They would deliver a face-to-face resource providing trusted, accurate information for those living in renewable energy regions, on everything from household electrification to large-scale projects.

NEW REPORT: COALITION’S NUCLEAR FOLLY WOULD COST AUSTRALIAN ECONOMY AT LEAST $4.3 TRILLION BY 2050

EMBARGOED TO 12.01 AEST THURSDAY 24 APRIL 2025New analysis by independent public interest think tank Climate Energy Finance (CEF) looks at the economic implications of the nuclear pathway modelled by Frontier Economics for Australia’s energy transition – cited extensively by the Federal Coalition to defend its nuclear plan. The analysis reveals a massive hollowing out of Australian industry, permanently higher total energy costs, uncosted andunabated carbon pollution, and trillions of dollars in lost GDP. TheCEF analysis exposes damaging flow-on costs to the economy for which the Frontier modelling fails to account. Combined with Frontier’s extreme underestimation of the capital costs…
