Belly Bands launches medically-backed ‘Heal Better’ app that 1 in 3 expectant mums need to fill major gap in safe recovery information for C-section mums.

April marks C-Section Awareness Month, and with 1 in 3 babies in Australia now born via caesarean, it’s never been more important to support women through safe and informed recovery. That’s why Australian maternity brand Belly Bands has developed the Heal Better App,  a complimentary, medically-reviewed tool designed to help women recover safely and confidently after a C-section or other abdominal surgery.

The app was developed after Belly Bands conducted comprehensive research with medical professionals, uncovering a troubling reality: many women were relying on unsafe or inappropriate online advice, with little structured support during recovery. What’s worse, international companies were targeting Australian women with products that the Belly Bands team and their healthcare collaborators knew weren't safe for pregnancy or post-surgical healing.

“Recovering from a caesarean isn’t just about resting,” says Sandie Brunswick, General Manager of Belly Bands and Heal Better. “There are specific movements, strategies, and warning signs that women need to understand to heal well and avoid complications, but this information can be hard to access, especially during those early days after birth. We created the Heal Better App to make it easier.”

“We know mums will always put their baby’s needs first, that’s just what they do. But we’re here to take care of the mums. In those early days when they’re sore, tired, and bombarded with conflicting or unhelpful advice, the Heal Better App is a quiet, reassuring voice they can turn to. It’s everything they need, right there in their hand, backed by research and medical approval.”

What Most People Don’t Know About C-Section Recovery:

  • A caesarean is major abdominal surgery, cutting through several layers of tissue and muscle. Recovery can take six to eight weeks or longer.

  • Most women leave hospital with minimal guidance on how to move safely, care for their wound, or support healing.

  • The way you get out of bed, sneeze, or even hold your baby can affect your recovery and risk of complications.

  • Wearing an abdominal binder, has been shown to reduce pain, support mobility, and lower risks such as wound separation or hernias, but it’s important to use the right kind of binder or you can risk harming yourself.

What the Heal Better App Delivers:

  • A guided daily recovery plan, written in consultation with women’s health professionals

  • Gentle movement and mobility guidance, designed to protect healing tissues and the postpartum body

  • Education on pain management, wound care, scar therapy, emotional healing and more.

  • Support for other abdominal procedure recoveries, including hysterectomy, hernia repair, endometriosis surgery and more.

“We want women to feel informed, confident, and supported in their healing, not left to figure it out alone,” says Ms Brunswick. “The Heal Better App is our way of making expert recovery advice more widely available.”

With over a decade of experience supporting pregnancy and postpartum recovery, Belly Bands remains committed to helping women move, heal, and feel better.

Alongside the app, Belly Bands also offers a C-Section Recovery Kit, a must-have for new mums navigating those first weeks post-op.

Flu shot concerns ahead of worrying flu season

Doctors are voicing concerns about the declining flu vaccination rate and say Australia faces the perfect storm this winter with an early start to what is expected to be a bad flu season. Flu vaccinations among high-risk groups have been declining in recent years. Last year, only 61% of adults aged more than 65 were protected against the flu, compared to 70% in 2022. Among children under five, years, only a quarter were vaccinated for the flu last year, down from almost a third a few years ago. Bupa Medical Director Dr Tony MacDermott encouraged Australians to book a flu…

Can sensory vests help treat anxiety in Autistic children?

La Trobe University has been awarded more than $780,000 under the Federal Government’s Medical Research Future Fund to investigate the effect of a type of sensory vest on Autistic children's mental health. Autistic children experience anxiety at six times the rate of non-Autistic children. Australian families are increasingly using NDIS funding to purchase sensory garments to treat anxiety in Autistic children. The garments are close-fitting pieces of clothing made from stretch fabric that provide continuous sensory input during daily routines including sleep. La Trobe has been approached by clothing manufacturer JettProof for an industry partner-initiated study to assess the effectiveness…
