A NEW BEGINNING BECKONS FOR HOMELESS FAMILIES IN CAIRNS
As the Salvation Army commences its redevelopment of a community housing project (40 homes) at Sheridan Street, Cairns
On Friday the 9 May, The Salvation Army celebrated the commencement of their redevelopment social housing project in Cairns. A collaboration between the Queensland Government, The Salvation Army, this new complex will eventually house over 40 individuals and families who would otherwise be at risk of being homeless.
The Sheridan Street site was previously the home of the Salvation Army’s Centennial Lodge since 2006 and is now being redeveloped and repurposed, replacing not-fit-for-purpose 35 crisis beds with 40 long term social housing units, as well as a community hub.
The project, delivered in partnership with the Queensland Government, marks a significant investment in addressing homelessness in Far North Queensland. It aims to provide not just a roof over people’s heads, but also the essential supports needed to rebuild lives and foster long-term stability.
The new community hub will serve as a central access point for holistic, person-centred services, including mental health support, financial counselling, employment assistance, and community connection programs. Designed with dignity and empowerment in mind, the redevelopment will create a safe, welcoming environment for individuals transitioning out of homelessness.
“It has been a dream of The Salvation Army to better utilise this site and the significant funds provided by the Queensland State Government has allowed us to move forward so that we can soon see people with a permanent, secure roof over their heads,” said Major Mark Everitt, Divisional Commander of The Salvation Army in Queensland.
“The housing supply crisis does not look to be easing any time soon and it’s incumbent on organisations like The Salvation Army to do what they can to increase supply of affordable housing options around the state. We’re excited to finally start to see this project come to life and look forward to soon be here officially opening the building and welcoming deserving locals to move into their new forever home,” Major Everitt said.
Media are invited to attend for official speeches, interviews and to capture footage of the sod-turning.
