Budget shows renting a key issue in lead up to 2026 election

Tenants Victoria, the State’s peak body for renting, says renting is a key issue for many voters as we head towards the next Victorian election.

Tenants Victoria CEO Jennifer Beveridge said today’s Victorian budget includes little new support for renters, and more is needed.

‘In Victoria, 30 per cent of us are renters, and too many struggle to pay the rent. More supports for renters would mean fewer people giving up things they need at the supermarket checkout,’ Ms Beveridge said.

‘While renters’ rights have improved over the past few years, market conditions have not.

‘With so many Victorians experiencing poor renting conditions, I’d expect to hear more about support for renters from all parties as we move towards the 2026 election.’

‘This year, too many renters are struggling to pay their rent, or must enter into disputes with their landlord to get essential matters sorted such as repairs. We had hoped to see additional supports for renters in today’s budget. After all, a secure home is the foundation for a healthy, happy life.’

Ms Beveridge said that positive measures include increased funding for no-interest loans so that when people get an unexpected bill-shock, like when the fridge breaks down, it doesn’t become a huge problem.

‘While some renters will benefit from measures in this budget, many renters overall remain in a tough position,’ Ms Beveridge said.
