Celebrating the 1 in 6 North Sydneysiders who volunteer in our community

North Sydney Council < 1 mins read

North Sydney Council extends a warm thank you to the thousands of volunteers in our community during National Volunteer Week. We encourage everyone to get involved.

Over 10,000 people in the North Sydney local government area volunteer, according to the 2021 Census. That’s about 1 in 6 people who share their time and skills to make our community vibrant and connected. This is a far higher proportion than across Greater Sydney.

Mayor Zoë Baker says:

“In a time when we are increasingly polarised and isolated, volunteering brings people together. It is part of the heartbeat of our community, improving social inclusion and connectedness. That sense of giving back and connecting with others makes North Sydney such a special place to live, study and work.”

If you want to volunteer, check out current opportunities on Council’s website. Volunteers are needed to monitor Aboriginal heritage sites, care for the Coal Loader chickens, tutor IT at a local community centre, coach junior sports teams – and more.

There’s something for everyone. Whether you have a specialist skill to share or can lend a helping hand, your help is welcome. For a few hours a week or a one-time event, every bit counts.

Council is also celebrating inspiring young and long-term local volunteers on our social media this week. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram.

Commission condemns terrorist attack on Jewish community

15 December 2025 Commission condemns terrorist attack on Jewish community The Australian Human Rights Commission today extends its condolences to the victims and loved ones of yesterday’s horrific antisemitic terrorist attack at Bondi Beach on the first day of Hanukkah. We are deeply saddened and horrified by the violent attack in Bondi during a Jewish celebration which resulted in the loss of at least 16 lives and left many others wounded and traumatised. Violence motivated by hatred or extremism has no place in Australia. Antisemitism is abhorrent. It tears at the social fabric of our community. Antisemitism has been rising…
