CHIA Vic backs govt funding to deliver hundreds of homes for Aboriginal Victorians

CHIA Vic < 1 mins read

Victoria’s peak body for community housing applauds the state government for its investment in delivering hundreds of social homes for Aboriginal people.

As part of the Big Housing Build, the Victorian Government has announced more than $153 million to create up to 348 new homes for Aboriginal Victorians.

The homes, to be delivered by Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations, will be built across the state including in Greater Shepparton, East Gippsland, Wodonga, Greater Geelong and Ballarat.

CHIA Vic CEO Sarah Toohey said: “It’s great to see the Victorian Government delivering on its commitment to dedicate 10 per cent of all new social housing under the Big Housing Build to Aboriginal Victorians.

“This funding will see Aboriginal-led organisations deliver hundreds of homes for Aboriginal Victorians. These homes will be genuinely affordable for those who are bearing the brunt of the housing crisis.

"Aboriginal Victorians are disproportionately affected by the dysfunction in the rental market and the shortage of social housing. It is critical for Aboriginal Victorians, who are regularly priced out of the private rental market, that the growth in social housing continues beyond the Big Housing Build.

"The Big Housing Build is life-changing — it’s creating safe, secure, and affordable homes for those who need them most. To close the housing gap, we need continued investment in social housing that meets the needs of Aboriginal people, strengthens communities, and creates the foundation for long-term stability and opportunity."
