Disaster lawyer available for interview about floods and insurance

Legal Aid NSW < 1 mins read

Legal Aid NSW senior disaster lawyer Ma’ata Solofoni is available for media interviews about the Mid North Coast floods. She can talk about how:

  • Free legal help is available for Mid North Coast floods victims (through Legal Aid NSW) around issues like insurance rejections, housing, employment and government grants.
  • What people affected by floods should know about the insurance claims process including that they may be eligible even if they don't have flood cover.
  • How a lawyer can help if a claim has been rejected – and how we have had clients receive tens of thousands after an initial denial.
  • What people can do now to maximise their chance of approval e.g. taking photos with timestamps.

We also have a client affected by the 2022 floods available for interview on request.

Case study

Pensioner Ruth Nielsen's Central West home was damaged in the November 2022 floods and her insurance claim was rejected because she didn’t have flood cover. Due to a breast cancer diagnosis, she didn’t have the energy to challenge the denial. However, with the help of a DRLS lawyer, she was able to prove some of the damage came from stormwater and received around tens of thousands of dollars in benefits.  She has been living in a temporary accommodation pod for the past three years and hopes to rebuild her home soon.

Who Gets the Dog? What Major New Law Changes Mean for Separating Couples –a Lawyer Explains As of this week, separating Australian couples will need to navigate a very different legal landscape – including how the courts now decide who keeps the pets. A suite of major reforms to the Family Law Act took effect yesterday, introducing new rules around property division, family violence, financial transparency – and for the first time, pets. The changes apply to all family law matters that haven’t yet gone to a final hearing, meaning many current cases could be impacted. “This is the most…
