Flood update – 109 schools to reopen Monday

NSW Department of Education < 1 mins read

109 schools will reopen on Monday 25 May following the severe weather event that affected the Mid North Coast, Hunter and Central Coast.

60 schools will remain closed on Monday across impacted regions, as well as 173 early childhood education and care services and seven TAFE NSW campuses. This includes 33 public schools, three Catholic schools, and 24 independent schools.

Families from the communities where schools have reopened have been informed directly by their schools.

If you have been told that your school is closed, please keep your children at home.

Importantly, if a school is closed, it will not be offering minimal supervision to students.

Learning from home resources will be made available for all students. Schools continue to be the first point of contact on educational matters throughout this difficult time.

Some schools remain closed until we can safely assess potential impacts to school assets and infrastructure. We will conduct these assessments as soon as it is safe to do so.

Extending post-study work rights attracts more international students

New research from the e61 Institute shows that extending post-study work rights (PSWRs) boosts international student enrolments and encourages graduates to stay in Australia temporarily - but does little to improve their job prospects or chances of permanent residency. The study analyses Australia’s 2013 reforms to the Temporary Graduate Visa, which extended post-study work rights from 18 months to up to four years for university graduates. Following the change, international student enrolments in university programs eligible for the extended work rights rose by 27% - from around 110,000 to 140,000. “Giving international students more time to work in Australia after…
