Oxfam congratulates Labor on its re-election to government, calls for more action on aid, climate and inequality

Oxfam Australia < 1 mins read

Responding to the outcome of the 2025 federal election, Oxfam Australia’s Interim Chief Executive, Dr Chrisanta Muli, said:

“Oxfam congratulates all candidates elected to the Australian parliament, including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and his Labor government.

“The re-election of the Labor government for a historic second term sends a strong message. Australians support a forward-looking agenda that prioritises fairness, inclusion, and long-term reform.

“We welcome the opportunity to continue working with the Labor government, which in its previous term took positive steps to stabilise and begin restoring Australia’s aid program. However, the current aid budget remains inadequate to meet the scale of the challenges we face both in our region and globally.

“As the world faces growing uncertainty and instability, Australia must step up, alongside other middle powers, to promote peace, stability and shared prosperity in our region.

“We are calling on the government to increase Australia’s aid contribution from 0.65% to 1% of total federal spending. This is a modest, achievable target that would make a meaningful difference in the lives of many and is supported by the Australian public.

“In this new term, the Albanese government has an opportunity and responsibility to take further steps towards a fairer and more just society. That means tackling the root causes of inequality through progressive reform in areas such as aid, climate, tax, housing, social security, wages, and human rights.

“The Government must continue and recommit to advancing support for First Peoples’ justice, primarily by investing in Treaty and Truth-telling processes at the national level.

“Oxfam looks forward to working with the Albanese government and all newly elected representatives to help build a fairer, more sustainable future.”
