Queenslanders’ chance to turn 10 cents into $10,000

Containers for Change 2 mins read

Queenslanders have the chance to turn 10 cents into $10,000 by returning their eligible beverage containers through Containers for Change.

For a chance to win, participants need to return at least 100 eligible containers in one go before June 30 and submit their receipt online to be in the running for a $10,000 cash prize.

Another $10,000 cash prize will be awarded to a participating charity, school or community group.

The more containers returned, the more chances to win, with one return and entry permitted every 24 hours.

Containers for Change members earn double entries, so participants can double their chance of winning by signing up to become a change maker.

Queenslanders have returned more than 10 billion beverage containers since Containers for Change began in November 2018.

That has put $1 billion in 10-cent refunds back into Queensland communities and diverted more than 600,000 tonnes of containers waste from landfill.

Natalie Roach, Chief Executive Officer of Container Exchange, the not-for-profit organisation that runs Containers for Change, said the competition was a chance to give back to Queensland’s avid recyclers.

“We hear incredible stories about the real difference Containers for Change makes across the state from boosting recycling rates to providing charities, schools and community groups with the means to raise funds in a convenient and ongoing way,” Ms Roach said.

“Every container returned through Containers for Change is recycled and puts more 10-cent refunds back into the Queensland community.

“This competition is an opportunity to thank Queensland’s avid recyclers for their support and encourage more people to return their empties to the nearest return point.”

Visit the Containers for Change website for the competition entry form and terms and conditions.

Kelly O’Shanassy to wrap up more than a decade as CEO of the Australian Conservation Foundation

Following more than a decade of outstanding service at the helm of Australia’s national environment organisation, trailblazing leader Kelly O’Shanassy has announced she will step down as CEO of the Australian Conservation Foundation at the end of 2025. “It’s been an honour to lead this powerhouse organisation and serve Australians who love nature and want climate action. It’s a hard decision to step away — but unlike solar and wind, CEO energy is not renewable, and it’s time for a break. “I leave knowing we have created so much impact for nature and people. Together we’ve protected ancient forests from…

Monash breakthrough to revolutionise agriculture with climate-resilient designer crops

A breakthrough by Monash University scientists could revolutionise agriculture with designer crops suited to the climate of individual regions. In a comprehensive review of plant biology research, published in Science, an international team of researchers has redefined previously held theories about how plants sense and respond to temperature and developed a new model for thermosensing plants. They found that plants sense and respond to temperature through decentralised genetic networks of proteins and biological processes, challenging the long-standing theory that plants, like humans, rely on a single internal ‘thermometer’ to sense temperature. Lead researcher Professor Sureshkumar Balasubramanian, from Monash School of…
